VICTORIA, Minn. —
Kaitlin Kling (Le Roy, Minn.) recorded the best round of her collegiate career Saturday afternoon, as the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota sophomore fired a nine-over-par 81 during the opening round of the Bethel Royal Match at Deer Run Golf Club.
Fueled by Kling's career-best effort— the lowest round by a Cardinal since Gia Puch fired a seven-over 79 during the opening round of the 2009 MIAC Championships—the Cardinals finished 10
th in the team standings. Sunday's Day 2 of the 36-hole tournament was cancelled due to rain and thunderstorms
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) finished with a 90, followed by
Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga.) and
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn.) with 102 and 124 scores, respectively.
Carleton won the tournament with a 306, nine shots in front of host Bethel. Gustavus (317), St. Thomas (320), and St. Catherine (323) rounded out the top five.
Individually, Saint Benedict's Lauren Wise shot an even-par 72 to win by two shots over St. Thomas' Emily Thul and Carleton's Ziyl Wang. Christine Piwnica of Bethel, Carleton's Grace Gilmore, and Gustavus' Jessica Nelson all shot 75s to round out the top five.
