BLAINE, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey season gets underway this weekend, as all nine teams take part in the three-day MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase at the Schwan's Super Rink.

Scouting The Augsburg Auggies:
The Auggies are coming off a second-place finish in the regular-season standings—and a second straight MIAC Playoff title. Augsburg's post-season run came to a heartbreaking halt in the quarterfinals of the NCAA national tournament, where the Auggies dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to St. Norbert. … Augsburg returns its leading scorer in First-Team All-MIAC and Second-Team AHCA All-West Region All-American Nate Flynn, but the Auggies will be without the services of graduated senior Rory Vesel—an All-MIAC and AHCA All-American First-Teamer. … Flynn led the team in scoring for a second straight season a year ago, finishing with 30 points. … Flynn, who finished the season second among MIAC players in overall points, tied for third in goals (15) and tied for ninth in assists (15), finished with nine multiple-point games in 2016-17. … Eric Brenk recorded a team-high 16 goals—one more than Flynn—while Vesel posted a team-best 19 assists. … Augsburg finished the year with four players scoring 10 or more goals and boasted 15 players with 10 or more points. … Nick Schmit and Jordyn Kaufer shared the goaltending duties last season, with Schmit compiling a 2.11 goals-against-average and .929 save percentage, with Kaufer close behind wit a 2.95 GAA and .898 save percentage. … Augsburg's 4-3 loss to St. Norbert in the NCAA national tournament was its ninth overtime game of the season—the Auggies finished 2-1-6 in those OT contests.

Scouting The Bethel Royals:
The Royals are coming off a 3-20-2 season, including a 2-12-2 showing in the MIAC. … The Royals return honorable-mention All-MIAC pick Justin Bonanno, but will be without the services of graduated All-MIAC honorable-mention selection Michael Bond. … Bond was the core of the BU defense for four years, producing 24 points in 78 games. … Bethel returns three of its top four scorers and seven of its top 10—led by Peter Barral (9 G, 6 A, 15 Pts). … Barral's nine goals were a team-high—two more than Bonanno and Dallas Marvin. … Andrew Bjorklund and Tucker Gran netted two of BU's three game-winning goals last season. … Joe Sheppard and Jesse Garcia shared the goaltending duties in 2016-17, with Sheppard posting a 4.01 GAA and .884 save percentage in 16 games, followed by Garcia with a 4.42 GAA and .881 save percentage in 10 appearances. … The Royals scored first in two of their three wins a year ago. BU was 2-2-1 when scoring first, while going 1-18-1 when its opponent netted the game's first goal. … Bethel played three overtime games last season—falling to Hamline (3-2), while tying St. Thomas (1-1) and Augsburg (5-5).

Scouting The Concordia Cobbers:
The Cobbers are coming off a 14-11-2 season a year ago, including a 7-7-2 conference mark that earned CC its fifth straight MIAC Playoff appearance. … The Cobbers return First-Team All-MIAC selection Sam Nelson, who—along with Quinn Fuchs—was also named to the MIAC All-Rookie Team a year ago. … CC kicks off the season without the services of graduated senior Jordan Krebsbach, a three-time All-MIAC honoree, not to mention an MIAC All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman in 2014-15. … Zach Doerring (7 G, 18 A, 25 Pts), Jon Grebosky (13 G, 11 A, 24 Pts), and Mario Bianchi (8 G, 13 A, 21 Pts) return as the Cobbers' top three offensive producers. … Doerring's 18 assists—one of five Cobbers with 10 or more helpers—were a team high, while Grebosky's 13 goals were tops on the squad a year ago. … Doerring, Grebosky, and Bianchi were three of eight Cobbers with 10 or more points last season. … Nelson made an instant impact during his freshman campaign between the pipes, appearing in 20 of the team's 27 games. He compiled a 2.69 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage. … The Cobbers were unbeaten in their five overtime games last season (3-0-2)—CC beat Saint Mary's (3-2), Gustavus (3-2), and St. Thomas, while tying Hamline (1-1) and St. Olaf (2-2).

Scouting The Gustavus Gusties:
The Gusties head into the 2017-18 season on the heels of a 5-15-5 record a year ago—including a 4-10-2 showing and eighth-place finish in the conference standings. … Gustavus returns plenty of firepower this season, boasting seven of its top 10 scorers from a year ago. … Colin Hernon and Evan Erickson both scored a team-leading seven goals last season, while Jake Bushey led the team in both assists (16) and points (20). … Hernon added five assists to his team-leading seven goals and was the other Gustie to record 10 or more points last season. … Two of Russell Barone's three goals in 2016-17 were game-winners. Evan Erickson, Tim Donohue, and Colton Schmidt netted GAC's other three game-winning goals. … Erik Johnson and Chris Amsden shared the brunt of the work load in goal for the Gusties a year ago. Johnson finished with a 2.82 GAA and .908 save percentage in 13 games, while Amsden owned a 2.54 GAA and .908 save percentage in 10 appearances. … Johnson finished the year with a team-high 366 saves, while Amsden recorded the Gusties' lone shutout—a 16-save effort in a 3-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 11. … Gustavus played in eight overtime games last season—going 1-2-6. … Gustavus scored first in four of its five wins last season. Scouting The Hamline Pipers:
The Pipers are coming off a 10-10-6 showing a year ago, including a 7-5-4 effort and fourth-place performance in conference play. … Hamline made its third straight MIAC Playoff appearance in 2016-17, falling to Concordia 3-2 in the opening round. … The Pipers return nine of their top 10 scorers from a year ago—including First-Team All-MIAC and Second-Team AHCA All-American Mitch Hall. … Hall finished with a team- and conference-leading 23 assists, while also adding six goals for 29 points—tops among MIAC defensemen. … Four of Jordan's goals were game-winners. … Fellow First-Team All-MIAC selection Russ Jordan closed out his junior year with a team-best 18 goals, while also leading the squad with 32 points. … HU boasted five players with 10 or more assists, and nine players with 10 or more points last season. … Justin Quale enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign between the pipers for the Pipers, compiling a 2.80 GAA and .910 save percentage in 21 games. … Quale finished with 567 saves and compiled a 7-7-5 record. … Hamline played in a whopping 10 overtime games last season, going Including OT wins over UW-Superior (4-3) and Bethel (3-2). … Hamline scored first in nine of its 10 wins, going 9-3-3 when netting the game's first goal, while finishing 1-7-3 when its opponent scores first.

Scouting The Saint John's Johnnies:
The Johnnies enter the 2017-18 season on the heels of a 12-10-3 showing a year ago—including a 7-7-2 mark in MIAC action that left SJU just two points out of the MIAC Playoff hunt. … SJU boasted five players who earned MIAC post-season honors a year ago—including four returners. Sam Valerius and Cole Souto were All-MIAC First-Team selections,while Souto and Brady Heppner were named to the All-Rookie team, and Huba Sekesi was an honorable-mention pick. … The Johnnies return nine of their top 10 scorers from a year ago, led by Valerius, who recorded team highs in goals (9) and points (22), while sharing the team lead in assists (13) with Souto. … Saint John's closed out the year with 10 players posting 10 or more points. … Kevin Becker owned a team-high three game-winning goals, one more than Heppner and Robb Stautz. … Tyler Nelson and Andrew Lindgren shared the goaltending duties last season, with Nelson posting a 2.56 goals-against-average and .921 save percentage in 15 games, while Lindgren owned a 2.62 GAA and .899 save percentage. … Saint John's played five overtime games in 2016-17, going 0-2-3. … SJU scored first in eight of its 12 wins. Scouting The Saint Mary's Cardinals:
The Cardinals are coming off a 13-10-3 season a year ago, including a 9-6-1 effort in conference play—earning Saint Mary's its second MIAC Playoff appearance in the last three seasons. … Saint Mary's will open the season without the services of graduated First-All-MIAC performances Bob Kinne and Martin Gruse. The Cardinals do return a member of the MIAC All-Rookie Team in defenseman Kyle Meeh. … Kinne closed out the year as the team-leader in both goals (14) and points (24), while Gruse led the team in assists (14) and was second to Kinne in points (22). … Saint Mary's closed out the 2016-17 season with nine players racking up more than 10 points. … Seven different Cardinals recorded their first collegiate goals last season. … Aaron Davis and Phil Heinle shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals last season. Davis closed out the year owning a team-best 2.79 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage, with Heinle close behind with a 3.22 GAA and .894 save percentage in his final collegiate season. … Eleven of the Cardinals' 26 games were decided by one goal or less. … The Cardinals scored first in 15 of their 26 games—including 10 of their 13 wins. Saint Mary's finished 10-5-1 when scoring first, and 3-5-2 when its opponent nets the game's first goal.

Scouting The St. Olaf Oles:
The Oles are coming off a 7-15-3—including a 5-9-2 effort in conference play—in their first year under head coach Mike Eaves. … St. Olaf returns a pair of players who received MIAC post-season honors a year ago—Drew Otto was named First-Team All-MIAC, after finishing third in the conference in goals and fourth in points—while Jude Hull was an honorable-mention All-MIAC selection. … Otto closed out his junior season as the Oles' offensive leader, recording team-highs in both goals (15) and points (28), while finishing second to Steven Sherman in assists with 13. … Sherman owned a team-high 18 assists and finished second to Otto in points with 23. … Otto accounted for four of the Oles' seven game-winning goals. … Hulls and Eric Hancock both saw plenty of action between the pipes a year ago—Hull compiled a 2.57 goals-against-average and .926 save percentage in 11 games, with Hancock chipping in a 3.50 GAA and .899 save percentage in 14 contests. … St. Olaf played seven overtime games last season, going 1-3-3—the Oles' lone OT win, a 3-2 victory over Gustavus on Jan. 21. … The Oles scored first in nine of their 25 contests a year ago—St. Olaf went 3-12-1 when scoring first, while posting a 3-12-1 record when its opponents netted the game's first goal.

Scouting The St. Thomas Tommies:
The Tommies are coming off a 14-8-5 season that included an 11-3-2 conference mark and an MIAC regular-season title. … The Tommies dropped a 3-2 decision to Augsburg in the MIAC Playoff title game—it was UST's 32nd straight conference playoff appearance. … St. Thomas' regular-season MIAC crown was its fifth in the last six years. … UST head coach Jeff Boeser recorded his 100th victory as a head coach on Dec. 2 with a 3-2 win at Hamline.
