ST. PETER, Minn. — Talk about making a good first impression.
Colleen Lois kicked off her collegiate career as a member of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team with five straight victories on Friday—winning all three of her singles matches in the Gustavus Fall Invitational, while teaming with
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) for a pair of doubles wins at the ITA/Oracle Midwest Region Tournament.
Unfortunately for the Cardinal freshman, both sides of that perfect 5-0 run came to a halt during Saturday's second day of competition.
Lois suffered the first singles loss of her collegiate career with a three-set, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 setback to St. Catherine's Ella Graham, while Gustavus' Katie Aney/Bri Hartmann dealt Lois/Sonday an 8-4 setback in doubles
The Cardinal doubles teams of
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.)/
Ashley Frederickson (St. James, Minn.) and
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.)/
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) got their days off to a roaring start Saturday at the Gustavus Fall Invitational, as Boeve/Fredrickson beat Northwestern's Emily Knight/Shawna Spears, 8-6 and Barr/Kinzer dropped UW-Eau Claire's Gabby Oswald/Kylie Funk 8-5.
And Boeve/Fredrickson were just warming up.
The Cardinal duo collected their second win of the afternoon with an 8-1 thumping of Luther's Kelsey Kruse/Ellie Hemker, before completing the perfect run through Draw #2 with an 8-3 victory over Shira Busch/Maddie Bahr of UW-La Crosse.
Barr/Kinzer, meanwhile, had their tournament ended with an 8-3 loss to Arantxa Martinez/Madeline Park of the University of Dubuque,
Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.) and
Emily Strezishar (East Grand Forks, Minn.) dropped their two doubles matches Saturday, falling to St. Scholastica's Sarah Coryell/Danny Rojas 8-1 and Bethel's Kally Peterson/Mattie Lubben 8-3.
The Cardinals kick off their 2018 spring season on Jan. 26, hosting Martin Luther in a 6 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center. Saint Mary's opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play two days later, entertaining Carleton in an 11 a.m. contest, also at the Winona Tennis Center.
