WINONA, Minn. — When it comes to playing Martin Luther, it's safe to say that the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team has the Knights' number.
The Cardinals entered Friday's season-opener against MLC a perfect 11-0 against the Knights—including five straight 9-0 victories.
Make that 12-0 with six straight 9-0 wins.
Saint Mary's appeared to be in mid-season from, not dropping a set in cruising to a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther at the Winona Tennis Center.
"A perfect way to end the preseason," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "A solid win with consistent play from everyone."
The Cardinals rolled to wins in all three doubles matches to grab a quick 3-0 lead, then dropped just nine games in the six singles—including 6-0, 6-0 wins from
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.).
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, hosting Carleton in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. Match is set to begin at noon at the Winona Tennis Center.
