WINONA, Minn. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team squared off against the Knights Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, these Knights proved to have a much more potent arsenal.

Carleton—picked by the coaches to finish second to perennial power Gustavus in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll—swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches in straight sets in dealing the Cardinals an 8-1 setback.

"This was a good match for us," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "Carleton has finished second in the MIAC 13 years in a row—and they likely will again. I thought we played very solid tennis against them and overall, I'm very pleased with what I saw the entire weekend.

The Cardinals—coming off a 9-0, season-opening sweep of Martin Luther (the other Knights) on Friday evening—picked up just one singles victory against Carleton, as Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.) outlasted the Knights' Johnny Reichman in a three-set marathon, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 4.

The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 1-1 overall) are back in action with three matches next Friday and Saturday. Saint Mary's will face Carthage in a 6 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center on Friday, before hitting the road on Saturday for a pair of nonconference matches—facing St. Scholastica in a 2 p.m. match in Duluth, Minn., before heading to Superior, Wis., for a 7 p.m. showdown against UW-Superior.
