WINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg, the Cardinals' performance against Wartburg was a perfect "bounce-back."
The Cardinals, coming off a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to unbeaten Bethel on Saturday, rebounded in impressive fashion, cruising to an 8-1 win over Wartburg in a nonconference match Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I thought today's showing was a great response after (Saturday)," said Halberg. "We played solid tennis throughout."
The Cardinals got off to a quick start, as the doubles teams of
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.)/Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.),
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.)/
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.), and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.)/
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) all picked up convincing victories to give Saint Mary's a quick 3-0 lead.
And Saint Mary's picked up right where they left off in singlesgetting straight-set wins from Amiotte, Giesen, Sobczak,
Alec Rudh (Hastings, Minn.), and Zuzek to seal the win.
The Cardinals (2-3 overall) are back home at the Winona Tennis Center for a pair of MIAC matches next Saturday—hosting Macalester (noon) and Gustavus (6 p.m.).
