WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team had a flair for the dramatic Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals got a dramatic, come-from-behind win at No. 1 doubles en route to a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Macalester at the Winona Tennis Center.
"That was a big win for the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "They just refused to lose."
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) set the "dramatic" tone early, as the Cardinals' No. 1 doubles team, down 7-4, held off two match points and came back to post a 9-7 victory.
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) also collected a win in doubles, posting an 8-2 victory at No. 2
Macalester made things interesting by winning three of the six singles matches, but straight-set victories by Sonday, Barr, and Boeve ice the Cardinal victory.
Saint Mary's (1-2 MIAC, 3-4 overall) are back in action on Sunday, returning to the Winona Tennis Center for an 11:30 a.m. conference match against nationally ranked Gustavus.
