ST. PAUL, Minn. — After kicking off their season in a dual-meet format, the Saint Mary's University swim teams branched out a bit Saturday afternoon, taking part in the Hamline Invitational.
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) continued her dominance of the distance freestyle events in leading the Cardinal women to a third-place finish, while a pair of second-place efforts from Brennen McClay (Shakopee, Minn.) led the Saint Mary's men to a third-place team showing.
Shefchik, who won both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events in against both Concordia and Iowa Lakes Community College last weekend, picked up right where she left off Saturday, posting winning times of 5:49.89 in the 500 and 11:49.00 in the 1000.
And Shefchik was just one of several Cardinals to post times in the Top 7 Saturday afternoon.
Olivia Fleming (Hugo, Minn.) placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.96) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (27.14), while
Mara Caples (Rochester, Minn.) delivered fifth-place times of 2:28.37 in the 200 IM and 1:08.18 in the 100 backstroke, before posting a 1:19.98 to place seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
Katie Domack (Lakeville, Minn.) posted a 1:07.03 to finish fifth in the 100 butterfly, while
Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) notched a sixths in the 200 freestyle (2:17.48) and 500 freestyle (6:18.20).
The Cardinal women's 200 medley relay of Caples,
Erica Camarato (DeForest, Wis.), Fleming, and
Katie Beitz (Blaine, Minn.) placed third (2:01.40) and the 200 freestyle relay team of
Ashlyn Seifert, King, Domack and Shefchik also placed third (1:52.93).
McClay delivered second-place times of 23.07 in the 50 freestyle and a 50.39 in the 100 freestyle, while also placing sixth in the 500 freestyle (6:01.29). Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) finished sixth in both the 200 IM (2:13.02) and 100 backstroke (1:01.11) and was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.62). Darren Anes Dy Quiangco (Rochester, Minn.) added a sixth in the 100 butterfly (59.40) and a seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.48).
The Cardinals return home to the Jul Gernes Pool next weekend. Both teams will square off in a dual against St. Norbert on Friday at 4:30 p.m., before the Cardinal women return to the pool on Saturday, facing SW Minnesota State in a 1 p.m. dual.
