NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Christian Beamer (Two Harbors, Minn.) got the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships off to a roaring start Thursday.

Make that a roaring, record-breaking start.

Beamer shattered the school record in the high jump, clearing 1.96 meters to win the event and help the Cardinals sophomore to a 10th-place finish after the first four events of the seven event heptathlon.

Along with his winning showing in the high jump, Beamer also added a time of 7.92 in the 60, posted a leap of 5.69 meters in the long jump, and uncorked a throw of 8.29 meters in the shot put en route to his 2255 point total.

Concordia's Matt Bye leads the event with 2734 points, followed by Jordan Johnson of St. Thomas (2607) and Lukas Walton of Bethel (2393).

The final three events — the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1000 — will take place on Friday at St. Olaf College
