DULUTH, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's golf teams kicked off their seasons Friday afternoon, competing in the Twin Ports Collegiate, hosted by St. Scholastica and UW-Superior.
Â
And after the opening rounds of the 36-hole tournaments, both Cardinal teams found themselves in the same spot — sitting in third place in the eight-team fields.
Â
Bryce Galewski (Winona, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal men, shooting a three-over-par 74 on the par-71 Lester Park GC layout — leaving him in second place individually, one shot back of tournament leader Sam Albrecht of UW-Superior.
Â
Fueled by Galewski's effort, the Cardinals posted a first-day 325 team score — just 14 shots back of first-round leader UW-Superior.
Â
Cooper Craiger (Monticello, Minn.) chipped in an 80 for the Cardinals, followed by Joe Abdo (Edina, Minn. / 85), Josh Hill (St. Michael, Minn. / 86), and Blair Sanders (Kansas City, Mo. / 89).
Â
Jessica Massimo (Kenosha, Wis.) turned in an opening-round 92 to fuel the Cardinal women to a 390 opening-day performance St. Scholastica leads the women's field at 345, while UW-Eau Claire is second at 355.
Â
Along with Massimo's effort, the Cardinals also got 98s from
Dani Stevens (Delano, Minn.) and
Celeste Van Klein (Apple Valley, Minn.), while
Madyson Ulrey (North Manchester, Ind.) added a 102 and
Cassie Sepp (Duluth, Minn.) chipped in a 109.
Â
Both Cardinal teams return to the links on Saturday, this time heading to Nemadji Golf Course in Superior, Wis., for the final 18 holes of the two-day tournament.
