ONALASKA, Wis. — For the second weekend in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's golf team was in a stroke-shaving mood during the second day of a two-day tournament.
A week after knocking 26 strokes off their Day 1 score at the season-opening Twin Ports Collegiate, the Cardinals were at it again Sunday, trimming 24 shots off their opening-round score at the UW-La Crosse/Viterbo Invitational.
The Cardinals, coming off an opening-round 409 Saturday, got a tournament-low 92 from
Celeste Van Klein (Lake City, Minn.) and a 93 from
Jessica Massimo (Kenosha, Wis.) en route to a second-round 385 and a fifth-place team finish.
Massimo finished the 36-hole tournament with a team-best 187 — shooting rounds of 94-93 — while Van Klein rebounded from an opening-round 104 with the second-day 92 and a 196 total.
Madyson Ulrey (North Manchester, Ind.) posted a 104-100—204, with
Dani Stevens (Delano, Minn. / 107-100—207) and
Cassie Sepp (Duluth, Minn. / 114-105) rounding out the Cardinals' lineup.
UW-Platteville took home the team title, shooting a 700 (346-354), to beat co-host Viterbo by one shot. UW-La Crosse's Maija Tanberg won medalist honors, shooting a 157 (77-80), followed by Viterbo's Bailey Schmidt (80-80—160) and Hannah Moore (80-87—167).
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, returning home to The Bridges GC to host the Saint Mary's Invitational.
