• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals got 14 points from Noah Frechette (Lakeville, Minn.) and 11 from Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) and held off a furious second-half rally by Macalester in dealing the Scots a 63-61 victory in the teams’ conference-opener last Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday’s game at Hamline is the third straight road games for the Cardinals, who do not open the home portion of their schedule until Dec. 1, when they welcome Saint John’s to the Saint Mary’s Gym for a 7 p.m. showdown.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Saint Mary’s has three players averaging in double figures, led by Kareem Anthony-Bello (Chicago, Ill.) at 14.0 ppg. Frechette (12.0 ppg) and Shawn Pickford (Minneapolis, Minn. / 10.0 ppg) are the other two. Hunter Phillips (Minong, Wis.) is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.5 ppg.
• CAREER PERFORMANCES: Frechette recorded a single-game career-high in points with 14 against Macalester last Saturday. Frechette had tallied a then-career-best 10 points against Augustana on Nov. 16. Sawyer also enjoyed a career-day against Macalester, finishing with a career-high 11 points. … Hunter Phillips (Minong, Wis.) scored the Cardinals’ first eight points against Augustana on Nov. 16 en route to a career-high 13-point showing.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Eleven of the 12 Cardinals who saw playing time against Augustana on Nov. 16 scored at least two points, while nine of 11 scored against Macalester last Saturday.
• GETTING RED-HOT: Kareem Anthony-Bell (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 14 points in the Cardinals’ overtime loss to Augustana on Nov. 16 — with all 14 points coming in the second half.
• ON THE GLASS: After recording 39 rebounds in their season-opening overtime loss to Augustana, the Cardinals hauled in 43 boards against Macalester four days later.
• GOING DEEP: The Cardinals have recorded six 3-pointers in each of their first two games this season, led by Frechette with four and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) with three.
• LENDING A HAND: Saint Mary’s has dished out 25 assists in its first two games, including a season-high 15 against Augustana on Nov. 16. Anthony-Bello, Caden Freetly (Farmington, Minn.) and Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) all share the team lead with four helpers each.
• WORKING OVERTIME: Saint Mary’s 79-73 loss to Augustana on Nov. 16 was its first overtime game since beating Carleton 79-77 on Feb. 12, 2020. Saint Mary’s finished 2-0 in overtime games during the 2019-20 season.
• CONFERENCE CLIMB: Prior to Saturday’s conference-opener against Hamline, Saint Mary’s had not played an official MIAC game since the 2019-20 season, when the Cardinals finished 10-10 and earned their first MIAC Tournament berth since 1985. Saint Mary’s made its first MIAC Tournament appearance since 1985 in 2019-20, collecting the program’s first postseason victory with its 72-59 quarterfinal win over Bethel on Feb. 25. … SMU’s 10 MIAC wins in 2019-20 were the most since going 11-9 during the 1999-2000 season.
• WINNING WAYS: Saint Mary’s 6-2 record in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 included a five-game winning streak. It was the longest winning streak since winning six in a row as part of an 8-1 start to the 2010-11 season. … The Cardinals closed out the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season a perfect 3-0 on their home court — beating Gustavus (67-45), Bethel (57-48), and Hamline (57-54).
