ST. PAUL, Minn. — Friday's opening performance at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships may have may have appeared to be a tough act to follow for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams.
Â
The Cardinals, however, proved that somethings, things aren't always as they appear.
Â
A day after
Anna Swanson (Osceola, Wis.),
Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.),
Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.) and
Sydney Klausler (Lakeville, Minn.) all claimed conference titles during Friday's opening act, the Cardinals were once again at the top of their game when the curtain rose for their second act.
Â
Saint Mary's locked up two more conference titles — giving the Cardinals six on the weekend — and added three second-place efforts, leaving the SMU women seventh in the team standings, while the men placed eighth.
Â
Rachel Ohde (Chetek, Wis.) kicked things off for the Cardinals on Saturday, bringing home SMU individual conference title No. 5, as the senior cleared 1.64 meters to easily out-jump St. Catherine's Elsie Lundquist and Gustavus' Haliey Brocker, who tied for second at 1.51 meters.
Â
And just minutes after Ohde was crowned queen of the high jump, the Cardinal men's 4x100 relay team of
Matt Boone (Mindoro, Wis.),
Noah Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.),
Garrett Jackson (West Linn, Ore.), and Lichttenegger became SMU's sixth conference champ, breaking the tape in 41.31 to edge out Saint John's, which placed second in 41.43.
Â
Gearin (Osceola, Wis.) — fresh off her conference crown in Friday's pole vault — narrowly missed running to title No. 2 in the 400, finishing second to Bethel's Hannah Sankey with a time of 57.82.
Â
Lichttenegger also added a second-place showing to his ever-increasing MIAC honors, stopping the clock in 10.66 to finish second to Saint John's Ryan Miller, who blistered a conference-record time of 10.53 in winning the event.
Â
Saint Mary's other second-place effort came in the final running event of the championships, as the women's 4x400 relay team of Swanson, Klausler, Gearin, and
Mirijana Ganley recorded a time of 4:01.24.
Â
In other women's events on Saturday,
Bailey Joens (Osage, Iowa), who placed fourth in the MIAC heptathlon last week, cleared 1.53 meters to place tied for sixth in the high jump, while Klausler placed eighth in the 200 (26.46),
Amanda Tuvey (West St. Paul, Minn.) added an 11th in the steeplechase (12:03.20) and
Samantha Kubes (New Prague, Minn.) placed 13th in hammer (37.56m).
Â
On the men's side, Boone clocked a time of 21.99 to place fourth in the 200, with Anderson adding a seventh-place effort of 22.09.
Jake Homan (North Mankato, Minn.) placed seventh in the shot put (14.67m),
Coleton Strupp (Holmen, Wis.) finished 10th in pole vault (4.12m), and
Dan Cooper (Belle Plaine, Minn.) was 14th in triple jump (12.52m). The men's 4x400 relay team of Boone,
Jon Meaden (Rosemount, Minn.),
Jake Hogan (La Crescent, Minn.), and
Isaiah Brindamour (Hinckley, Minn.) closed out the day with a seventh-place time of 3:30.00.
