GREENSBORO, N.C. — Oh, so close.
The Saint Mary's University men's 4 x 100 relay team — competing in its second straight NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships — came up just short Thursday afternoon in their quest to reach Saturday's final.
The Cardinal quartet of
Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.),
Matt Boone (Mindoro, Wis.),
Noah Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.), and
Garrett Jackson (West Linn. Ore.), running in the second of two heats, clocking a 10th-place time of 41.49.
"Obviously, we would have like to have done a little better, but finishing 10
th in the nation is still a great accomplished," said Lichttenegger. "We ran well, it was not meant to be today."
UW-La Crosse posted the event's top time of 49.18, with Wartburg (40.54), Saint John's (40.88), John Carroll (40.98), Rowan (41.01), Mount Union (41.05), UW-Eau Claire (41.07), and Benedictine (41.20) rounding out the Saturday finals qualifiers — and leaving North Central (41.34) and Saint Mary's (41.49) on the outside looking in.
