Swanson’s school-record toss of 46.65 meters was the top spot in the championships until the very last throw of the competition.
• NCAA QUALIFIERS: The men’s 4x100 relay team of Kyle Lichttenegger, Noah Anderson, Matt Boone, and Garrett Jackson placed 10th at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships on May 27, clocking a time of 41.49.
• MIAC CHAMPS: Saint Mary’s boasted five MIAC Outdoor individual champions in 2021 — Lichttenegger in the long jump, Swanson in the javelin, Caroline Gearin in the pole vault, Rachel Ohde in the high jump, and Sydney Klausler in the long jump. … The men’s 4x100 relay team of Lichttenegger, Anderson, Boone, and Jackson were also crowned outdoor conference champions.
• ALL REGION: Twelve Cardinals were named USTFCCCA All-Region — awarded to individuals with times/marks among the Top 5 in the region and relay teams in the Top 3. Lichttenegger led the way for the Cardinals, earning All-Region honors in the 100, long jump and 4 x 100 relay, where he was joined by Boone, Anderson, and Jackson. … On the women’s side, Swanson, Klausler, Ohde, Gearin, and Bailey Joens were all-region recipients.
• LOOKING BACK: The Cardinals posted seven first-place finishes and 23 Top-5 efforts at the St. Olaf Ole Open on May 8. … Saint Mary’s recorded three first-place finishes and added 15 Top-5 performances at the St. Thomas Tomcat Invitational on April 30. … The Cardinals delivered 11 first-place individual event winners at the SMU Drake Alternative on April 24. … The Cardinals recorded 10 first-place finishes and posted 31 Top 5 performances at the non-team-scored Hamline Invitational on April 17. … In their second road meet of the season, the Cardinals posted a combined 10 first-place finishes — including a pair of individual titles and a relay title for Boone — and boasted 21 Top 3 performances at the Gustavus Lee Krough Invitational on April 10. … The Cardinals picked up 19 Top 5 performances — including four event winners — at the Saint John’s Invitational on April 2. … The Cardinals put together 16 first-place finishes in the rain-plagued Masked Mayhem Opener on March 27 at the Saint Mary’s Track & Field Complex, led by Boone, who posted his second straight first-place triple — winning the 100 prelims, 100 finals, and 200. Swanson led the way for the Cardinal women, posting three first-place efforts — winning the 800, the javelin, and running the anchor leg of the Cardinals’ winning 4x400 relay. … In their only indoor meet of the 2021 season, the Cardinals collected a combined 15 first-place finishes — including three by Boone.
