SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s home opener against Augustana (Ill.) on the heels of an 81-69 win over Crown last Tuesday in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
• LAST TIME OUT: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 30 points to lead four players in double figures, as the Cardinals pulled away in the second half en route to a commanding 81-69 nonconference victory over the Polars last Tuesday on the road.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: With last Tuesday’s win over Crown, six of the Cardinals’ last nine wins have come on the road. Saint Mary’s finished 5-8 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym a year ago.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Anthony, who scored 10 or more points 17 times last season, scored a team-best 30 points against Crown last Tuesday. Anthony was one of four players to score in double figures against the Polars, being joined by Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) and Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) with 14, and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) with 11.
• GREATER THAN 20: Anthony’s 30-point effort against Crown last Tuesday marked the 13th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game — and was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• CAREER SCORING PERFORMANCES: Saint Mary’s had 10 players record single-game career-highs of 10 or more points last season.
• DOUBLING UP: Along with his 30 points, Anthony also delivered 11 rebounds against Crown last Tuesday en route to his first double-double of the season. Anthony had a team-leading six double-doubles a year ago and now owns 11 in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony and Sawyer accounted for 19 of the team’s 32 rebounds against Crown last Tuesday — Anthony finished with a team-leading 11, while Sawyer chipped in eight. Buysman hauled in five points, while Bruce Lockwood (Shakopee, Minn.) added four. … Anthony led the team in rebounds a year ago with 179 (8.5 rpg). He led or shared the team lead in rebounds in 16 of SMU’s 26 games last season.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s knocked down six 3-pointers against the Polars last Tuesday, shooting 50.0 percent from beyond the arc as a team (6-for-12). Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — led the way for SMU vs. Crown, draining three 3s, followed by Sawyer with two and Buysman with one. … The Cardinals — who recorded 10 or more treys in a game five times — closed out the 2021-22 season with 178 3-pointers.
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals nearly equaled their season high from a year ago with 15 assists against Crown last Tuesday. SMU posted a season-high 17 helpers against Mary Hardin-Baylor in an 84-64 loss last season. … Anthony led SMU with eight assists against the Storm.
• PERFECT FROM THE LINE: Sawyer was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line against Hamline on Jan. 26, 2022. His 10 free throws were the most since Anthony knocked down 13 of 15 attempts against Augsburg on Feb. 5, 2020. … Sawyer’s effort against the Pipers marked the first time since Michael Burfeind on Jan. 12, 2013 that an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 from the line.
• FEW TRIED: Saint Mary’s attempted just 25 free throws against Crown last Tuesday, with Anthony accounting for 15 of those 25 attempts. The senior 12 of 15 from the line, while the rest of the Cardinals were a combined 6-for-8.
