WINONA, Minn. — It was a homecoming to remember for Saint Mary's University's
Josh Janssen.
Â
Janssen, a native of Green Bay, Wis., returned to his hometown over the weekend and promptly led the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team to three straight nonconference victories.
Â
And the Cardinal junior's efforts did not go unnoticed, as Janssen was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Janssen did not lose a match on the weekend — winning all three of his matches at No. 2 singles, and teaming with Matt Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) to post three straight wins at No. 1 doubles.
Â
Janssen kicked off the busy weekend with a quick, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ripon's Preston Wurtz and an 8-5 victory in doubles play. The junior was forced to a third set in his second match against Lawrence's Giacomo Bocanegra, before prevailing with a 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 victory, while adding an 8-6 doubles win.
Â
In his final match, Janssen was unstoppable, delivering a 6-1, 6-2 singles victory and completing the perfect 6-0 weekend with an 8-4 victory in doubles action.
Â
For the season, Janssen is sitting at a near-perfect 5-1 in singles play, while owning a 4-2 mark in doubles play.
