Cardinals can't overcome slow start

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis had its sights set on a second straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory when the Cardinals set foot on the courts at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

Macalester, meanwhile, was looking to regain a little momentum, after dropping a 5-2 nonconference loss to Post University in its last outing on March 18.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, a slow start put them behind the eight ball, as Macalester regained its momentum — and kept SMU from that second straight victory — beating Saint Mary's 9-0 Saturday afternoon.

"Macalester was just too deep for us," said Saint Mary's head coach Jeff Halberg. "We didn't get off to a great start in doubles, but gave a better account of ourselves in the singles portion of the match."

Macalester took control of the match early, winning all three doubles matches — 9-2, 8-1 and 8-0 — before clinching the victory by dropping just 20 games in sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.

The Cardinals are right back in action on Sunday, as they welcome Bethel to the Winona Tennis Center for a conference match. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
