WINONA, Minn. — For the second straight day, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was in the midst of a match decided by a 9-0 outcome.
Unlike Saturday, however, this time around, the Cardinals were on the losing end of that 9-0 decision.
Carleton entered Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Saint Mary's unbeaten on the year — and the Cardinals got a first-hand look at just how good the Knights actually were.
Carleton outlasted the Cardinals in the three doubles matches, and dropped just 14 games in sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets in dealing Saint Mary's the 9-0 setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I thought we played well, but just didn't have enough against one of the best teams in the conference — and the region," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The ladies battled, we just didn't have enough firepower."
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in SMU's best performance in doubles play, dropping a heartbreaking 8-6 decision at No. 2
. Frye also put together Saint Mary's top effort in singles play, falling 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
The Cardinals (4-5 MIAC, 12-7 overall) are now off until April 23, when they play host to St. Scholastica in their regular-season finale at the Winona Tennis Center.
