MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was on a roll heading into Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Catherine, having won three straight — including back-to-back 5-4 victories in its last two contests.
Â
St. Catherine, however, was unimpressed, and promptly put an end to the Cardinals' winning ways with a 9-0 victory at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Â
"The ladies put up a good fight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "St. Catherine just had too much depth for us."
Â
The Cardinals fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches, but each was a tightly contested match — including No. 2 doubles, where
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) dropped an 8-6 decision.
Â
The Wildcats' turned up the heat in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets, with only two matches in which SCU lost more than two games — SMU's
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 and Frye dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 4.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4 MIAC, 10-6 overall) are back in action next weekend with three matches. Saint Mary's heads to Owatonna, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC match against Hamline on Friday, before traveling east to River Falls, Wis., to take on UW-River Falls at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and returning home to the Winona Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. conference matchup against Carleton.
