SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their first conference game of the season sitting at 2-1-0 overall, thanks to back-to-back shutout wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence, and a 1-0 loss to Wartburg.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s allowed a penalty kick goal in the 27th minute, and failed in its own PK attempt early in the second half, as Wartburg dealt the Cardinals a 1-0 setback on Sept. 6 in Waverly, Iowa.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Thanks to their 2-0 victory over Lawrence on Sept. 4, the Cardinals improved to 7-1-2 on their home field over the last two seasons — the Cardinals were a near-perfect 5-1-2 at Ochrymowycz Field a year ago.
• THROWING UP ZEOES: All three of the Cardinals’ games this season have been decided by shutout. Saint Mary’s beat UM-Morris 3-0 and Lawrence 2-0 to open the season, before falling to Wartburg 1-0 on Sept. 6. … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The goals by Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) against UM-Morris on Sept. 1 were both collegiate firsts. The Cardinals had six players net their first goal in a Saint Mary’s uniform during the 2021 season. … Skoruppa also added an assist against the Cougars on Sept. 1 en route to her first career three-point game.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cardinals’ five goals through three games have come from five different players — Lahart, Skoruppa, Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.), and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.).
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her goal, Falkman has also assisted on two of SMU’s other four goals to lead the team with four points, one more than McKinney and Skoruppa.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) — the reigning MIAC Defensive Player of the Year — has started all three games in goal for the Cardinals, owning a 0.33 goals-against-average and .889 save percentage. … Nguyen did not have to make a save en route to her first shutout of the season against UM-Morris on Sept. 1, before adding a two-save shutout against Lawrence three days later. Nguyen, who recorded eight shutouts a year ago, has now collected 11 shutouts in her four-year collegiate career.
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen stopped a season-high six shots in the Cardinals’ 1-0 nonconference loss to Wartburg on Sept. 6, after making just two saves, combined, in her first two starts.
• SLOW STARTERS: The Cardinals’ five goals this season have all come in the second half. Saint Mary’s scored 19 of its 41 goals in the second half last season.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s owns a 50-29 advantage in shot attempts through three games — including 24-9 in shots on goal.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
