SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against Bethel sitting at 7-5 overall, including a 3-4 showing after seven conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 32 points and the Cardinals overcame a 21-0 Saint John’s first-half run, as Saint Mary’s rallied for a 69-57 win over the Johnnies last Saturday at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• ON A ROLL: With their 69-57 win over Saint John’s, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to five straight. SMU’s current five-game run is its longest win streak since winning five straight during the pandemic-shortened 2021 season. Saint Mary’s has not won six in a row since the 2010-11 season.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cardinals’ 69-57 win over Saint John’s last Saturday snapped their 29-game losing streak against the Johnnies, dating back to a 63-60 SMU win on Jan. 22, 2007.
• HOME (OR ROAD) SWEET HOME: With their win over Saint John’s on Saturday, SMU moved to 4-2 on its home court this season, while going 3-3 in six road contests. … Wednesday’s matchup against Bethel is the fourth straight home game for the Cardinals.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ nine-point, 81-72 win over Hamline last Wednesday was their seventh game this season decided by 10 points or less — including five of seven MIAC contests. SMU has dropped nail-biting decisions to Concordia (82-77), Gustavus (74-71), Macalester by one (77-76) and St. Olaf (75-69), while beating No. 7 UW-La Crosse (73-66), North Park (83-82), and Hamline (81-72).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Along with Anthony’s game-high 32 points last Saturday, Cameron Mallory (Joliet, Ill.) also scored in double figures against the Johnnies, finishing with 12 points.
• DOUBLE-DIGIT AVERAGES: Anthony, who has scored in double figures in all 12 contests this season, and 49 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging a team-leading 24.0 ppg, while Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) are also averaging in double figures at 14.3 ppg and 14.2 ppg, respectively.
• AMONG THE PROGRAM’S BEST: Anthony’s 41-point showing against North Park on Dec. 30 — which included 26 points in the second half — was the highest single-game individual performance since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008. … Anthony’s 41 points were the third-most in program history and just five shy of the school-record 46 posted by Ken Jansen against Macalester during the 1956-57 season.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in nine of its 12 games this season — including five of their last six contests. … Anthony’s 32-point showing against Saint John’s last Saturday marked the third time this season the senior has scored 30 or more points, and the 20th time in his four-year career that he has netted 20+ points.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 25-point effort by Buysman and 23-point showing by Anthony against Hamline last Wednesday, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game four times this season.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 4: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 or more points in a game four times this season. Anthony has posted a 30-point game against Crown on Nov. 8, a 32-point showing against Saint John’s last Saturday, and a 41-point barrage vs. North Park on Dec. 30, while Ziegler delivered 30 points against Carleton on Dec. 3.
• CAREER NIGHTS: Saint Mary’s has had four players recorded single-game career-highs of 10 or more points this season — Anthony (41), Ziegler (30), Mason Klett (Apple Valley, Minn. / 27), and Buysman (25), while Bruce Lockwood (Shakopee, Minn.) equaled his career-high with 10 points against Hamline last Wednesday.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With his field goal at 5:48 of the second half against Finlandia on Jan. 2, Anthony became the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Anthony — who is SMU’s first 1,000-point scorer since Eli Cave ’21 hit the milestone during the 2020-21 season — currently sits 24th all-time with 1,056 career points. Next up: Michael Burfeind ’13 (1058), Nick Michaels ’03 (1059), and Mike Horvath ’82 (1066).
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in 10 of its first 12 games – including four double-figure scorers five times.
• DOUBLING UP: Along with his 32 points against Saint John’s last Saturday, Anthony also delivered 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. … Anthony now owns 17 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career. … Anthony collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. … Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties on Nov. 19, and three assists short of a triple-double vs. Hamline on Wednesday.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 115 (9.6 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 44 (3.7 rpg), while Bruce Lockwood (Shakopee, Minn. / 39, 3.3 rpg), Buysman (37, 3.1 rpg), Ziegler (35, 2.9 rpg), and Mallory (33, 2.7 rpg) have also hauled in more than 30 boards this season. … Anthony’s 15 rebounds against Hamline last Wednesday matched his career-high and were just one shy of the program record of 16, set by Will Swiggum against Martin Luther on Nov. 24, 2015. … SMU has amassed 396 rebounds in 12 games (33.0 rpg) — including 301 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Finlandia on Jan. 2. It marked the second time this season the Cardinals have hit 14 3s in a game, having first achieved the feat against Carleton on Dec. 3. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton on Dec. 3, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler leads the way for SMU with 46 treys, followed by Buysman with 27.
• NOBODY’S BETTER: The Cardinals — who have knocked down 113 3-pointers in 12 games — lead all of NCAA Division III in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 43.6 percent (106-for-245) from behind the arc
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 67 assists, followed by Sawyer with 31. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• WEEKLY HONORS: Saint Mary’s has had two players named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week — Buysman on Dec. 19, 2022 and Anthony on Jan. 9, 2023. It was the fourth career MIAC Player of the Week honor for Anthony, who was also named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on both Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.
• HITTING 100: The Cardinals’ 102 points in their 102-68 win over Finlandia on Jan. 2 were the most since they beat Luther 103-97 in overtime on Nov. 30, 2019. … Saint Mary’s has now had a team score 100 or more points 10 times in program history — including a program-record 110 in a 110-99 win over UM-Duluth on Jan. 26, 1956.
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals erupted for 55 first-half points against Finlandia on Jan. 2, the highest single-half performance in more than 30 years. … SMU has scored 40 or more points in a half in nine of its 12 games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton (Dec. 3), Finlandia (Jan. 2), and Hamline (Jan. 4).
• A WIN FOR THE AGES: SMU’s six-point win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14 marked the first time in program history the Cardinals had beaten a team ranked in the Top 10 in the country. … The win also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Eagles — dating back to a 65-50 triumph on Nov. 24, 1986.
• SEASON-BESTS: Saint Mary’s recorded season-highs in numerous statistical categories against Finlandia on Monday, including points (102), field goals made (41), field goals attempted (82), 3-pointers made (14), 3-pointers attempted (36), rebounds (52), assists (23), and blocked shots (6)
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 47.7 percent from the field (354-for-742), with 113 3-pointers, and are 119-for-161 (73.9 %) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s is averaging 78.3 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 72.4 ppg clip. … Saint Mary’s has scored 80 or more points in a game five times this season, including a season-high 102 against Finlandia on Jan. 2.
BETHEL ROYALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals head into Wednesday’s conference matchup at Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-9 overall, including a 2-6 mark through eight MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Royals put four of their five starters in double figures — including a 23-point, 17-rebound showing by Zach Doely — as the Royals rolled to an 87-63 MIAC win over St. Olaf last Saturday at Robertson Center Gym in Arden Hills, Minn.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After three straight home games, Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back road contests for the Royals. BU has posted three of its four wins on its home court, going 3-4 at Robertson Center, while owning a 1-5 showing on the road.
• BOUNCING BACK: After opening the season 1-5, Bethel has gone 3-4 in its last seven contests.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Royals head to Winona boating four players who are averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Doely’s 18.5 ppg average. Payton Thomsen (14.4 ppg), Tommy Jensen (11.5 ppg), and Joey Kidder (11.0 ppg) are also scoring more than 10 points per game. … Doely has scored 10 or more points in all 13 Bethel games this season, including three games of 20+ points — highlighted by a season-high 32-point effort against Gustavus on Jan. 4. … Thomsen has also posted a 30-point game this season, going for 31 against Macalester on Dec. 10.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Doely has been a rebounding machine for the Royals, hauling in 128 boards in 12 games (10.7 rpg), including three games with 16 or more boards. Avery Mast is second on the team with 49 rebounds (4.1 rpg), followed by Payton Thomsen with 43 (3.3 rpg) and Caden Boettcher (41 (3.2 rpg). … Doely’s 17 rebounds against St. Olaf last Saturday were a season-high.
• DOUBLING UP: Doely has recorded six double-doubles this season, including a 23-point, 17-rebound showing against St. Olaf last Saturday.
• RAINING IN 3s: Bethel has poured in 98 3-pointers this season and is shooting 31.2 percent from behind the 3-point line. Mast leads the Royals’ long-range bombers with 25 treys, followed closely by Jensen with 23 and Thomsen with 20. The trio have accounted for 68 of BU’s 98 3-pointers.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his team-leading 18.5 ppg and 10.7 rpg, Doely also leads the Royals in assists with 35, three more than Sam Nelson, while Thomsen (23) has also delivered more than 20 helpers this season.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Bethel is shooting 43.9 percent from the field (340-for-775). The Royals have gone 98-for-314 (31.2 %) from beyond arc, and are 161 of 216 (74.5 %) from the free throw line. … BU is averaging 72.2 ppg, while its opponents are scoring at an 80.3 ppg clip. … Bethel has played one overtime game this season, outscoring Crown 14-8 in the extra session of a 77-71 win on Dec. 16. … BU has scored 77 points in a game four times, and owns three games of 80+ points — including a season-high 88-point showing in beating Gustavus 97-88 loss to Gustavus on Jan. 4.
