WINONA, Minn. —
Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) has made himself a household name — and a thorn in the side of Saint Mary's University men's basketball opponents around the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
But the Cardinal senior's performance this season isn't limited to those around the MIAC — or the Midwest for that matter.
On Sunday, Small College Basketball and the National Awards Committee announced the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List for the 2022-23 season — which included the Cardinals' Anthony. The Top 100 Watch List consists of some of the top players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA.
On February 15th, the list will be reduced to the Top 50 players. One month later, on March 15, the Top 25 players will be announced. On April 1st, the finalists of this year's award will be announced, followed by the Bevo Francis Award winner being crowned on April 3rd.
In its seventh season, the Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements.
Anthony has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Cardinals this season, carrying a team- and conference-leading 23.6 ppg scoring average, while also hauling in a team-best 133 rebounds (9.5 rpg). The senior guard is shooting 53.9 percent from the field (124-for-232), with 12 3-pointers, and is 68 of 94 from the free throw line (72.3 %) — while averaging 35.2 minutes.
Fueled by a 24-point performance against Bethel and a 18-point showing against St. Scholastica in SMU's two victories last week, Anthony has now scored in double figures in all 14 games this season, with nine games with 20+ points — including a 30-point night against Crown, a 32-point game against Saint John's, and a career-best 41-point outing against North Park.
Anthony, whose 41-point showing against North Park on Dec. 30 was the highest single-game individual performance since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008, collected his 1,000th career point against Finlandia on Jan. 2 and is currently sitting 21st all-time with 1,098 career points.
And scoring isn't the senior's only forte.
Anthony also leads the team in rebounds (133, 9.5 rpg) and assists (72), and has recorded eight double-doubles — including his first career points/assist double-double with 19 points and a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
With Anthony leading the charge, the Cardinals have rattled off seven straight wins — the longest streak since the 1955-67 season — heading into Monday's matchup against Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minn.
