SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown at Augsburg sitting at 9-5 overall, including a 5-4 showing after nine conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) led three players in double figures and the Cardinals overcame an 11-point second-half deficit in beating St. Scholastica 58-57 last Saturday in Duluth, Minn. – extending their winning streak to seven straight.
• ON A ROLL: With their one-point, 58-57 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to seven straight — their longest winning streak since the 1966-67 season. Saint Mary’s takes the court Monday against Augsburg looking for the first eight-game win streak in program history.
• ROAD TRIP: After four straight home games, Monday’s matchup at Augsburg is the second of three consecutive road contests for the Cardinals. … SMU boasts 5-2 record on its home court this season, while going 5-3 in seven road contests.
• CLOSE CALLS: Eight of the Cardinals’ 14 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less — including six of nine MIAC contests. SMU has dropped nail-biting decisions to Concordia (82-77), Gustavus (74-71), Macalester (77-76), and St. Olaf (75-69), while beating No. 7 UW-La Crosse (73-66), North Park (83-82), Hamline (81-72), and St. Scholastica (58-57).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Along with Anthony’s team-high 18 points against St. Scholastica last Saturday, Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 12 points and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) added 11.
• DOUBLE-DIGIT AVERAGES: Anthony, who has scored in double figures in all 14 contests this season — and 51 times in his four-year collegiate career — is averaging a team- and conference-leading 23.6 ppg, while Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Ziegler are also averaging in double figures at 14.1 ppg and 13.6 ppg, respectively.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in 10 of its 14 games this season — including six of their last eight contests. … Anthony’s 32-point showing against Saint John’s on Jan. 7 marked the third time this season the senior has scored 30 or more points, while his 24-point showing against Bethel last Wednesday was the 20th time in his four-year career that he has netted 20+ points.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 25-point effort by Buysman and 23-point showing by Anthony against Hamline on Jan. 4, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game four times this season.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 4: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 or more points in a game four times this season. Anthony has posted a 30-point game against Crown on Nov. 8, a 32-point showing against Saint John’s last Saturday, and a 41-point barrage vs. North Park on Dec. 30, while Ziegler delivered 30 points against Carleton on Dec. 3.
• CAREER NIGHTS: Saint Mary’s has had four players recorded single-game career-highs of 10 or more points this season — Anthony (41), Ziegler (30), Mason Klett (Apple Valley, Minn. / 27), and Buysman (25), while Bruce Lockwood (Shakopee, Minn.) equaled his career-high with 10 points against Hamline on Jan. 4.
• AMONG THE PROGRAM’S BEST: Anthony’s 41-point showing against North Park on Dec. 30 — which included 26 points in the second half — was the highest single-game individual performance since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008. … Anthony’s 41 points were the third-most in program history and just five shy of the school-record 46 posted by Ken Jansen against Macalester during the 1956-57 season.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With his field goal at 5:48 of the second half against Finlandia on Jan. 2, Anthony became the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Anthony — who is SMU’s first 1,000-point scorer since Eli Cave ’21 hit the milestone during the 2020-21 season — currently sits 21st all-time with 1,098 career points. Next up: Marty Lillig ’62 (1,119) and Jerry Sauser ’67 (1,136).
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in 12 of its first 14 games – including four double-figure scorers six times.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 133 (9.5 rpg), while Sawyer is second with 51 (3.6 rpg). Lockwood (47, 3.4 rpg), Buysman (44, 3.1 rpg), Ziegler (43, 3.1 rpg), and Cameron Mallory (Joliet, Ill. / 39, 2.8 rpg) have also hauled in more than 30 boards this season. … Anthony’s 15 rebounds against Hamline on Jan. 4 matched his career-high and were just one shy of the program record of 16, set by Will Swiggum against Martin Luther on Nov. 24, 2015. … SMU has amassed 464 rebounds in 14 games (33.1 rpg) — including 367 defensive boards.
• DOUBLING UP: Along with his 24 points against Bethel Wednesday, Anthony also delivered 10 rebounds for his eighth of the season — including double-doubles in three of SMU’s last four games. … Anthony now owns 18 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career. … Anthony collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. … Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties on Nov. 19, and three assists short of a triple-double vs. Hamline on Jan. 4.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Finlandia on Jan. 2. It marked the second time this season the Cardinals have hit 14 3s in a game, having first achieved the feat against Carleton on Dec. 3. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton on Dec. 3, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler leads the way for SMU with 50 treys, followed by Buysman with 31.
• AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: The Cardinals — who have knocked down 126 3-pointers in 14 games — rank No. 3 in NCAA Division III in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 42.4 percent (126-for-297) from behind the arc. … Ziegler is currently sitting fourth in the country in 3-point FG percentage (50.0 %) and fifth in 3-pointers made per game (3.57).
• LENDING A HAND: Along with leading the team in scoring and rebounding, Anthony also boasts a team-best 72 assists, followed by Sawyer with 39. … The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• WEEKLY HONORS: Saint Mary’s has had two players named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week — Buysman on Dec. 19, 2022 and Anthony on Jan. 9, 2023. It was the fourth career MIAC Player of the Week honor for Anthony, who was also named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on both Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.
• HITTING 100: The Cardinals’ 102 points in their 102-68 win over Finlandia on Jan. 2 were the most since they beat Luther 103-97 in overtime on Nov. 30, 2019. … Saint Mary’s has now had a team score 100 or more points 10 times in program history — including a program-record 110 in a 110-99 win over UM-Duluth on Jan. 26, 1956.
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals erupted for 55 first-half points against Finlandia on Jan. 2, the highest single-half performance in more than 30 years. … SMU has scored 40 or more points in a half in 10 of its 12 games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton (Dec. 3), Finlandia (Jan. 2), and Hamline (Jan. 4).
• A WIN FOR THE AGES: The Cardinals’ 69-57 win over Saint John’s last Saturday — which included overcoming a 21-0 half-ending SJU run and rallying from a nine-point halftime deficit — snapped their 29-game losing streak against the Johnnies, dating back to a 63-60 SMU win on Jan. 22, 2007.
• A WIN FOR THE AGES II: SMU’s six-point win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14 marked the first time in program history the Cardinals had beaten a team ranked in the Top 10 in the country. … The win also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Eagles — dating back to a 65-50 triumph on Nov. 24, 1986.
• SEASON-BESTS: Saint Mary’s recorded season-highs in numerous statistical categories against Finlandia on Jan. 2, including points (102), field goals made (41), field goals attempted (82), 3-pointers made (14), 3-pointers attempted (36), rebounds (52), assists (23), and blocked shots (6)
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 47.0 percent from the field (405-for-862), with 126 3-pointers, and are 139-for-190 (73.2 %) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s is averaging 76.8 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 70.8 ppg clip. … Saint Mary’s has scored 80 or more points in a game five times this season, including a season-high 102 against Finlandia on Jan. 2.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies head into Monday’s home game against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-10 overall, including a 2-7 showing through the first nine games of the conference slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Olaf erased an 11-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Auggies 47-32 in the second half in dealing Augsburg a 72-68 conference setback last Saturday at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Monday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the third straight home contest for the Auggies, who are sitting at 1-5 in its first six home games this season, while sporting a 3-5 mark away from Si Melby Hall.
• STREAKING: Saturday’s 72-68 loss against St. Olaf was Augsburg’s second straight setback — with both losses by four points or less The Auggies dropped a three-point, 66-63 decision to Hamline last Wednesday. … Augsburg’s loss to Hamline last Wednesday snapped its season-high two-game winning streak.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Augsburg boasts two players who are averaging in double figures through 14 games. Connor Knoepfle leads the way with an 11.0 ppg scoring average, with Will Blascziek close behind at 10.6 ppg. Colin Meade is third on the team with a 9.6 ppg average, followed by Bradley Winter and Kayser Hassan at 8.9 ppg each. … Meade scored a season-high 23 points against St. Olaf last Saturday, marking the third straight game in which Augsburg has had a different player lead the team in scoring. … Knoepfle owns Augsburg’s only other 20+ point performance, scoring 21 against Carleton on Nov. 30.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with his 8.9 ppg scoring average, Winter owns the team lead in rebounds with 87 (6.2 rpg). Meade has hauled in 76 boards (5.4 rpg), while Hassan (58, 4.1 rpg) and Isaac Rabsey (52, 3.7 rpg) have also collected 50 or more rebounds this season. …Winter owns Augsburg’s top individual rebounding performances, pulling down 11 boards against Bethel on Nov. 22 and adding a season-high 13-rebounds effort against UM-Morris on Nov. 28.
• RAINING IN 3s: The Auggies have drained 73 3-pointers through 14 games, led by Blascziek with 25 and Knoepfle with 17. Hassan is one trey away from reaching double digits, as the trio have accounted for 51 of Augsburg’s 73 3s.
• LENDING A HAND: The Auggies have dished out 129 assists and boast six players who have delivered at least 10 helpers — led by Knoepfle 31 and Blascziek with 19. … Augsburg dished out a season-high 16 assists against Emerson on Dec. 20.
