SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against Hamline sitting at 5-5 overall, including a 2-4 showing after five conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Mason Klett (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored 27 points, Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) added 21, and the Cardinals eclipsed the 100-point mark for the 10th time in program history with a 102-68 nonconference win over Finlandia Monday at the SMU Gym.
• ON A ROLL: With their 102-68 win over Finlandia, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to three straight. SMU’s current three-game run is its longest win streak since winning five straight during the pandemic-shortened 2021 season.
• HOME (OR ROAD) SWEET HOME: With their 102-68 win over Finlandia on Monday, SMU moved to 2-2 on its home court this season, while going 3-3 in six road contests. … Tuesday’s matchup against Hamline is the second of four straight home games for the Cardinals.
• HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: The Cardinals’ 102 points in Monday’s 102-68 win over Finlandia were the most since they beat Luther 103-97 in overtime on Nov. 30, 2019. … Saint Mary’s has now had a team score 100 or more points 10 times in program history — including a program-record 110 in a 110-99 win over UM-Duluth on Jan. 26, 1956.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ one-point, 83-82 win over North Park on Dec. 30 was their sixth game this season decided by 10 points or less — including four of five MIAC contests. SMU has dropped nail-biting decisions to Concordia (82-77), Gustavus (74-71), Macalester by one (77-76) and St. Olaf (75-69), while beating North Park and No. 7 UW-La Crosse (73-66).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Klett, who entered Monday’s game against Finlandia having scored a career-high three points twice in his first two seasons, knocked down 17 first-half shots en route to a career-best 27-point showing against the Lions. Anthony chipped in 21 points, while Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) added 15 and Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) added 11.
• DOUBLE-DIGIT AVERAGES: Anthony, who has scored in double figures in all 10 contests this season, and 47 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging a team-leading 23.3 ppg through 10 games, while Ziegler and Buysman are also averaging in double figures at 15.2 ppg and 13.8 ppg, respectively.
• AMONG THE PROGRAM’S BEST: Anthony’s 41-point showing against North Park on Dec. 30 — which included 26 points in the second half — was the highest single-game individual performance since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008. … Anthony’s 41 points were the third-most in program history and just five shy of the school-record 46 posted by Ken Jansen against Macalester during the 1956-57 season.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in eight of its 10 games this season — including each of their last four contests. … Anthony’s 21-point showing against Finlandia on Monday marked the 18th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 27-point effort by Klett and 21-point showing by Anthony against Finlandia on Monday, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game three times this season and five times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all five.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 2: With Ziegler’s 30-point showing against Carleton on Dec. 3, Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 points in a game twice this season. Anthony netted 30 against Crown on Nov. 8.
• CAREER NIGHTS: With Klett’s 27-point performance against Finlandia on Monday and Anthony’s career-high 41-point night against North Park on Dec. 30, Saint Mary’s has had a player post a career-high of 10 or more points in back-to-back games and four times this season. After scoring a then-career high 26 points against St. Olaf on Nov. 30, Ziegler improved that mark by four against Carleton on Dec. 3, netting 30 points against the Knights, while Buysman poured in a career-best 23 points in SMU’s win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14. … Anthony dished out a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With his field goal at 5:48 of the second half against Finlandia on Monday, Anthony became the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Anthony — who is SMU’s first 1,000-point scorer since Eli Cave ’21 hit the milestone during the 2020-21 season — is poised to make a steady climb up the ladder. He currently sits at 1,002 career points and trails Roger Pytlewski ’63 by two points (1003), John Jimenez ’91 by 13 (1014), and Will Swiggum ’16 by 36 (1037).
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in nine of its first 10 games – including four double-figure scorers four times.
• DOUBLING UP: Along with his 41 points, Anthony also hauled in 14 rebounds — one shy of his career high — against North Park last Friday for his fifth double-double of the season. … Anthony now owns 14 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career. … Anthony collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 90 (9.0 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 41 (4.1 rpg) — with 35 of his 41 boards coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 338 rebounds in 10 games (33.8 rpg) — including 257 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Finlandia on Monday. It marked the second time this season the Cardinals have hit 14 3s in a game, having first achieved the feat against Carleton on Dec. 3. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton on Dec. 3, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler leads the way for SMU with 42 treys, followed by Buysman with 22.
• NOBODY’S BETTER: The Cardinals — who have knocked down 97 3-pointers in 10 games — lead all of NCAA Division III in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 43.5 percent (97-for-223) from behind the arc.
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 57 assists, followed by Sawyer with 29. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals erupted for 55 first-half points against Finlandia on Monday, they highest single-half performance in more than 30 years. … SMU has scored 40 or more points in a half in seven of their 10 games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton on Dec. 3 and vs. Finlandia on Monday. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half 14 times over the last two seasons — with 11 of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half.
• A WIN FOR THE AGES: SMU’s six-point win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14 marked the first time in program history the Cardinals had beaten a team ranked in the Top 10 in the country. … The win also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Eagles — dating back to a 65-50 triumph on Nov. 24, 1986.
• SEASON-BESTS: Saint Mary’s recorded season-highs in numerous statistical categories against Finlandia on Monday, including points (102), field goals made (41), field goals attempted (82), 3-pointers made (14), 3-pointers attempted (36), rebounds (52), assists (23), and blocked shots (6)
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 47.7 percent from the field (300-for-629), with 97 3-pointers, and are 93-for-129 (72.1 %) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s is averaging 79.0 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 74.0 ppg clip. … Saint Mary’s has scored 80 or more points in a game four times this season, including a season-high 102 against Finlandia on Monday.
HAMLINE PIPERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pipers head into Wednesday’s conference showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 7-3 overall, including 3-2 through their first five games of the MIAC slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Pipers scored 34 points in both the first and second halves and rolled to a 68-58 nonconference win over North Central last Saturday in their final nonconference game of the season
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the third of four straight road games for HU, which sports a 4-2 record on their home court, while going 3-1 away from Hutton Arena.
• NONCONFERENCE DOMINATION: With their 10-point win over North Central last Saturday, Hamline closed out their nonconference slate with a 4-1 record — rattling off wins over Luther (61-58), Martin Luther (80-57), UW-River Falls (75-72) and North Central (68-58) after opening the season with an 89-66 loss to Northwestern in their season-opener.
• NAILBITERS: Five of Hamline’s 10 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less, including a one-point, 79-78 loss to Carleton and three-point wins over both Luther (61-58) and UW-River Falls (75-72).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Hamline heads into Wednesday’s showdown against Saint Mary’s boasting three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Bradley Cimperman leads the Pipers’ offense, owning a 17.9 ppg scoring average, while Daniel McCarrell and Austin Holt are close behind at 16.7 ppg and 15.7 ppg, respectively. … Holt has scored in double figures in all 10 games this season, while Cimperman has finished with 10 or more points in nine of HU’s 10 contests.
• GREATER THAN 20: Hamline has had a player score 20 or more points six times — three times each by McCarrell and Cimperman. … McCarrell’s 28-point effort against Carleton on Dec. 7 are a season-high.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Holt has been the Pipers’ rebounding leader, hauling in 97 boards (8.7 rpg) through 10 games. Cimperman is second with 57 rebounds (5.7 rpg), followed by Mick Wherley with 47 (4.7 rpg).
• DOUBLING UP: Holt has amassed a team-leading six double-doubles, while Cimperman has recorded two. … Holt and Cimperman both posted double-doubles in HU’s wins over Luther and Martin Luther — Holt had 16 points and 11 boards vs. Luther and 15 points and 10 rebounds against Martin Luther, while Cimperman recorded 18 points and hauling in 10 rebounds in both games.
• RAINING IN 3s: Hamline has poured in 71 3-pointers in 10 games, led by McCarrell with 22. Cimperman (12) and Sam Hoffman (10) have also knocked down 10 or more treys, while Holt and Zach Reinsma each own eight 3s. … HU — which drained a season-high 13 3-pointers against Bethel on Nov. 30 — is shooting 30.5 percent from behind the arc (71-for-233).
• LENDING A HAND: McCarrell has dished out a team-leading 32 assists and is one of five HU players to reach double-digits in assists this season — being joined by Holt (24), Cimperman (21), Hoffman (11), and Blake Christensen (10).
• WORKING OVERTIME: Hamline has played one overtime game this season, outscoring UW-River Falls 8-5 in the extra session in beating the Falcons 75-72 on Dec. 17.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Hamline is shooting 42.3 percent from the field (250-for-591) with 71 3-pointers and are 124-for-191 (65.4 %) from the free throw line. … The Pipers are averaging 69.6 ppg, while their opponents are scoring at a 66.7 ppg clip. … HU has outscored its opponents 696-667 — 342-318 in the first half and 354-349 after the break. … Hamline has scored 70 or more points five times this season — including two games of 80 or more points. HU netted 80 points in beating Martin Luther 80-57 on Nov. 15 and poured in a season-high 90 in drubbing Bethel 90-77 on Nov. 30.
