Cardinals' Anthony lands MIAC honor

1/9/2023 1:01:00 PM

WINONA, Minn. — The numbers are jaw-dropped — 26.2 points-per-game, 10.8 rebounds-per-game, 26 assists, nine steals — and five Saint Mary's University men's basketball victories.

Mix in a career-high 41-point performance; knocking down a buzzer-beating, game-winning half-court 3-pointer to beat North Park 83-82; and pouring in the 1,000th career point of his collegiate career, and it's been quite a run for Saint Mary's University's Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.).

And on Monday, Anthony added yet another memorable moment to his remarkable five-game run — being named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Anthony kicked things off with a 14-point, seven-rebound showing in leading the Cardinals to a 73-66 upset of then-seventh-ranked UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14.

But that was just a taste of things to come, as Anthony scored a career-high 41 points — including the game-winning 3-pointer from just inside half-court with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation — to lift SMU to an 83-82 win over North Park on Dec. 30.

The senior guard shot a sizzling 66.7 percent from the field (16-for-24) with three 3-pointers and a 6 of 11 effort from the free throw line against North Park. He also added 14 rebounds — one shy of his collegiate best — and collected four assists.

Anthony's 41-point showing — which included 26 points in the second half — was the highest single-game individual performance since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008, and ranked third in program history, just five shy of the school-record 46 posted by Ken Jansen against Macalester during the 1956-57 season.

Three days after his 41-point outburst, Anthony was back at it, pouring in 21 points in a lopsided win over Finlandia — including a mid-range jumper with less than six minutes remaining that pushed the senior over the 1,000 career-point mark.

And he wasn't finished, delivering 23 points and 15 rebounds in an 81-72 win over Hamline last Wednesday, and topped it off with a 32-point, 10-rebound showing in the Cardinals' week-ending 69-57 upset of league-leading Saint John's — a win that snapped Saint Mary's 29-game losing streak against the Johnnies.

All told, Anthony shot 55.0 percent from the field (51-for-92), with four 3-pointers, and was 25 of 34 from the free throw line en route to his 26.2 ppg average, while also hauling in 54 rebounds (10.8 rpg) and adding 26 assists, nine steals and two blocks in leading SMU to perfect 5-0 record.

Anthony and the Cardinals (3-4 MIAC, 7-5 overall) are back in conference action on Wednesday, when they play host to Bethel in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Saint Mary's Gym.
