ST. PAUL, Minn. — Mother Nature wasn't the only thing make life miserable for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team Tuesday evening.
Macalester had a hand in it, too.
Playing in a miserable conditions — thanks to constant downpour courtesy of Mother Nature — did nothing to slow down the Scots' high-octane offense, as Macalester erupted for three second-half goals in dealing the Cardinals a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
Elijah Edelman got the Scots on the board in the 29th minute, feathering a shot on a free kick just past the outstretched arms of Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) and inside the left post to give Macalester a 1-0 advantage.
Macalester dominated play in the game's opening 45 minutes, outshooting SMU 9-2, including 4-0 in shots on goal — and it was more of the same in the second half, as the Scots once again attempted nine shots to Saint Mary's three, and held a 6-0 edge in shots on goal.
Coming out of the break, the Scots needed less than 10 minutes to extend their lead by two, as Kasdan Blattman scored three minutes into the second half and Grant Luce added another seven minutes later to give Macalester a commanding 3-0 cushion.
Macalester tacked on its third goal of the frame in the 62nd minute when Chris Frantz took a feed from Cody Da and beat Sessler low to the right side.
Mother Nature had the final say, however, filling the sky with lightning with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, putting an end to the conference contest.
Sessler finished with six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Sam Price did not have to make a save in goal for the Scots en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
The Cardinals (2-5-2 MIAC, 6-6-4 overall) close out their 2023 schedule on Saturday, returning home to Ochrymowycz Field for a 1 p.m. conference showdown against Hamline.
