SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals closed out the 2022-23 season sitting at 8-15-2 overall, including a 5-11-2 mark in conference play.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Five of the Cardinals’ eight wins in 2022-23 came on the road. … SMU Finished the year 3-6-1 on its home ice, while sporting a 5-9-1 mark away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• SPLITSVILLE: The Cardinals closed out the year splitting three of their last five MIAC conference series, going 1-1 against St. Scholastica, Bethel and St. Catherine. For the season, SMU split four of its nine conference series, having also split with Augsburg (W, 4-2; L, 3-2), while being swept by Gustavus (L, 4-0; L, 3-0), Hamline (3-0; 4-1), and Saint Benedict (3-1, 3-2 OT); going 1-0-1 against Concordia (T, 1-1; W, 4-3 ot); and finishing 0-1-1 against St. Olaf (T, 2-2; L, 2-1).
• CLOSE CALLS: Eight of Saint Mary’s last nine games a year ago were decided by two goals or less. All told, 15 of SMU’s 25 games in 2022-23 were decided by two or fewer goals.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 1-1 tie and 4-3 win over Concordia in its final two games of the season were the sixth and seventh overtime games of the season. SMU went 3-2-2 in those seven contest — owning wins over Concordia (4-3), Bethel (2-1) and UW-Stevens Point (2-1), while falling to Lake Forest (3-2) and Saint Benedict (3-2), and tying St. Olaf (2-2) and Concordia (1-1). … Saint Mary’s has now played 11 overtime games in the last two seasons.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) closed the season with a team-leading seven goals, one more than Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.). Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) and Taryn Dornseif (Somerset, Wis.) were both third on the team with five goals, followed by Jenna Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.) and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) with four, and Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), and Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) with three. … SMU’s 52 goals came from 16 different players.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s had five players score their first collegiate goals in 2022-23: Sherner, Dornseif, Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.).
• A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Polzin recorded her first collegiate hat trick and her first career five-point game in SMU’s 5-0 win over St. Catherine on Jan. 20. The hat trick was Saint Mary’s first since Bailey Wendt scored four times against Bethel on Feb. 3, 2018, while her five-point night was the team’s first since Nicole Olson equaled that feat with three goals and two helpers against St. Norbert on Nov. 4, 2011.
• NIGHT TO REMEMBER II: Urlaub delivered a goal and three assists in the Cardinals’ 5-1 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 11. The three assists and four points were both career highs.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Dornseif, Parker, Braun, Kingston, Kurkowski, Carmean, Devine, and Hegdahl.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornseif, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LENDING A HAND: Urlaub and Kingston closed out the year sharing the team lead in assists with seven each, followed by Polzin with six. Hegdahl finished with five helpers, followed by Carmean, Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), Pierpont, Wyant, and Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) with four each.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Saint Mary’s boasted three players who reached double figures in points — Kingston lea the way with 14 points, followed by Polzin and Urlaub with 12 each. Dornseif and Hegdahl finished the year tied for fourth with eight points.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals. Keeley finished the year stopping 389 of the 423 shots she faced in 17 appearances and owned a 2.49 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage, while Rimstad recorded 252 saves in her first 14 appearances as a Cardinal, and sported a 1.93 GAA and .920 save %. … Keeley stopped 30 or more shots in a game six times in 2022-23. … Rimstad made 30 or more saves in a game twice, including a career-high 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12.
• A BRICK WALL: Rimstad stopped all 24 shots she faced against St. Catherine on Jan. 20 and has now recorded two shutouts this season — having recorded a 13-save shutout against Lawrence on Dec. 10. … Rimstad had her scoreless minute streak ended at 195:56 minutes, giving up a first-period goal to St. Catherine’s Ellie Skaja at 7:42 of the first period on Jan. 21. It was the first goal the SMU freshman has allowed since a late, third-period goal by Hamline on Nov. 12.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals’ 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU had posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHT: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 ranked No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU scored 13 goals in the first period last season, while netting 17 goals in the second and 19 in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents scored 15 times in the first period, 23 times in the second, and 21 times in the third. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … The Cardinals recorded season-highs in goals (8), assists (8), points (16), and shots on goal (62) against Lawrence on Dec. 10
LAKE FOREST SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Foresters head into their season-opening weekend series against Saint Mary’s on the heels of a 15-9-4 showing in 2022-23, including a 9-5-2 performance in NCHA play.
• IN THE POST-SEASON: Lake Forest reached the semifinals of the NCHA Slaats Cup a year ago, going 1-0-1 against Concordia (Wis.) in the quarterfinals — tying 3-3 and winning 6-3 — before falling to fifth-ranked Adrian 2-0 in the semis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Foresters were dominant on their home ice a year ago, posting a 9-2-2 record, while sporting a 6-7-2 mark away from Alumni Memorial Arena.
• LIGHTIN THE LAMP: Lake Forest heads to Winona, Minn., without the services of their top two goal-scorers from a year ago. Samantha Shoebottom netted a team-leading 14 goals in her final year in a Forester jersey, while fellow senior Marissa Gebauer chipped in 10 goals. … Lauren Wensel is the top returner with nine goals, one more than Danielle Silby. … Karya Dean and Gebauer each scored three power-play goals last season, with Stoki Ashcraft, Abby Meyer, Zara Post, and Wensel all chipped in two. … Shoebottom, Ashcraft, and Wensel all scored three goals in a game last season.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Along with her 10 goals, Lake Forest will also have to replace Gebauer’s team-leading 13 assists. Willow Poppleton notched 12 helpers in her first season as a Forester a year ago, while Dean and Meyer each chipped in 10 assists. … Sophia Chapman dished out a single-game season-high three assists against Lawrence on Feb. 4.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Lake Forest closed out last season boasting 10 players who had recorded at least 10 points, including two — Gebauer (23) and Shoebottom (21) — with 20+ points. Meyer (16), Dean (15), Selby (15), Wensel (14), Ashcraft (13) Poppleton (12), Zera Post (12), and Emma Sweeney (11) also reached double figures in points a year ago.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Hannah Turnage played all but 162 minutes in goal for the Foresters during her senior season a year ago. Turnage compiled a 1.87 goals-against-average and .943 save percentage, while stopping 800 of the 848 shots she faced — including a season-high 58-save effort against Middlebury on Jan. 4.
• WORKING OVERTIME: Lake Forest played seven overtime games in 2022-23, going 3-0-4 in those seven contests. The Foresters best Saint Mary’s (3-2), Adrian (3-2), and Marian (1-0) in OT, while settling for ties against Aurora (2-2), Castleton (2-2), St. Norbert (3-3), and Concordia-WI (3-3).
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Lake Forest outscored its opponents 83-50 a year ago, including 20-12 in the first period, 28-15 in the second, and 29-15 in the third. … The Foresters netted 20 power-play goals, going 20-for-111 (18.0%) with the man advantage. … Lake Forest scored a game-high eight goals twice last season — beating both Lawrence and Trine by 8-0 counts. … LF also posted season-highs in points (22), assists (14), and shots on goal (75) against Lawrence on Feb. 4. … The Foresters were shut out seven times in 2022-23 — including failing to net a goal in each of their games against eventual national champion Gustavus on Nov. 4-5.
