St. Scholastica deals SMU 2-0 setback

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had its sights set on being an ungracious host to visiting St. Scholastica Friday evening.

Unfortunately, things didn't quite go as planned.

St. Scholastica scored single goals in each of the first two periods in dealing the Cardinals a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

Despite the Cardinals holding a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal, it would be the Saints who came up with the lone goal in the first period. A shot from Kayla Kasel snuck past SMU goalie Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) and into the net with just under four minutes remaining to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

And the lone goal of the second period would once again go to the Saints, as Abby Pohlkamp netted a quick tally just 3:24 into the stanza. The Cardinals managed 12 shots on goal, but all were blocked by CSS goalie Ashlea Arvidson, leaving SMU staring at a two-goal deficit heading into the third period.

The Cardinals had hoped to catch up to the Saints in the final period, but it was not to be. SMU tallied seven shots on goal in the final stanza, but all attempts to score would prove unsuccessful.

Sydney Green (Chicago, Ill.) led the Cardinals with five shots on goal, while Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) and Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) followed with four and three, respectively. Rimstad, meanwhile, made 22 saves in goal for SMU.

The Cardinals (3-11-1 MIAC, 6-15-1 overall) will close out their series against St. Scholastica at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
