WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team bounced back from a heartbreaking 5-4 nonconference loss to St. Norbert last Sunday in convincing fashion on Saturday, collecting a 6-3 victory over the University of Dubuque at the Winona Tennis Center.
"It was a good day of tennis for the guys," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "I thought everyone played very well — which is great to see at this stage in the season."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, getting wins from
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) at No. 2 and
Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Wis.) and
Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) at No. 3.
And the Cardinals sealed their fourth win of the season with four straight-set singles wins from Raabolle, Rodning,
E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.), and
Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.).
The Cardinals (4-1 overall) are back in action next weekend with a pair of road matches. SMU will head to White Bear Lake, Minn., for a 6:30 p.m. nonconference match against Northwestern on Friday, before making the trek to St. Peter, Minn., for a 1:30 p.m. showdown with MIAC powerhouse Gustavus this following afternoon.
