SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into this weekend’s matches against Northwestern and Gustavus sitting at 4-2 overall, including 0-1 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals raced out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition and delivered four, straight-set singles wins in sealing a 6-3 nonconference win over the University of Dubuque last Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After opening the season with back-to-back home matches, Saint Mary’s is in the midst of playing five of six contests on the road — the lone exception, last Saturday’s nonconference matchup against the University of Dubuque. … SMU is currently 2-1 on its home courts, while sporting a 2-1 record away from the Winona Tennis Center. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) collected one of SMU’s four singles matches against the University of Dubuque last Saturday to push his team-leading dual-match win total to five — including wins in each of his last four outings. … E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), and Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) are all tied for second behind Stene with four singles victories. … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row in 2022.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had seven singles contests extended to a third set this season — including three in their 5-4 nonconference loss at St. Norbert on Feb. 5. … SMU is 5-2 in those seven three-set matches. … SMU closed out the 2022 season owning a 22-23 mark in its 45 three-setters.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Min.) posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Raabolle leads the team in doubles wins with five, going 5-1 — including 3-0 partnered with Rodning and 2-1 playing with Stene. … Besek and Rodning are both a perfect 4-0 in doubles play, while Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) is 3-0. … Besek/Janssen and Raabolle/Rodning enter this weekend’s matches against Northwestern and Gustavus riding three-match winning streaks. … Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) led the Cardinals with 12 doubles wins last season — all at No. 1.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 6-3 win over the University of Dubuque last Saturday, the Cardinals improved to 75-34 in nonconference play since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
NORTHWESTERN EAGLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Northwestern enters Friday’s nonconference match against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-1 overall. The Eagles do not open UMAC play until April 1, when they host Bethany Lutheran.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles had their season-opening two-match winning streak snapped last Saturday, falling to Macalester 8-1 at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
• vs. THE MIAC: Friday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the third of seven nonconference matches against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UNW has already faced Concordia (W, 7-2) and Macalester (8-1), and along with Saint Mary’s, still has St. Scholastica, Saint John’s, Hamline, and St. Olaf on its schedule.
• SINGLED OUT: Andy Stevenson picked up UNW’s lone win against Macalester last Saturday, pushing his season-opening winning streak to three straight. … Stevenson’s three wins lead the Eagles, while Griffen Jarchow, Davis Plaff, and Drain Rupp are all sitting with two singles victories. … As a team, Northwestern is 11-7 in singles play thus far this season.
• DOUBLING UP: Northwestern has used the same three doubles combinations in all three matches this season, with each team sporting a 2-1 record. Plaff/Jacob Waddle are 2-1 at No. 1, Rupp/Stewart Morrell are 2-1 at No. 2, and Stevenson/Jachow are 2-1 at No. 3.
GUSTAVUS GUSTIES SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into Saturday’s matches against Saint Mary’s and UW-Eau Claire sitting at 5-2 overall, including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: GAC picked up three wins last Saturday, rolling to conference sweeps over St. Olaf and St. Scholastica, while a 9-0 nonconference victory over Central-Iowa.
• BACK ON TRACK: After dropping back-to-back decisions to NCAA Division I Creighton (5-2) and North Dakota (7-0) on Jan. 28-29, the Gusties have rattled off three straight wins.
• SWEEPING UP: In its five matches against NCAA Division III opponents, the Gusties have posted five consecutive 9-0 victories — sweeping UW-Stevens Point, Grinnell, St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, and Central-Iowa.
• MIAC DOMINANCE: The Gusties claimed their 33rd consecutive MIAC regular-season title with a perfect 9-0 run through the conference schedule a year ago. It was the 55th league title for GAC. … Gustavus captured its 11th straight MIAC Playoff title, and 14th in program history, with a 5-0 win over second-seeded Carleton. … In the 2022 NCAA Division III tournament, GAC defeated North Central (Ill.) 5-0, before falling to the nation’s top ranked team, the University of Chicago, 5-2.
• SINGLED OUT: Gustavus has gotten at least one singles win from 23 different players, including a team-high two singles wins from Nick Aney, Jack Bergmeyer, Josh Christensen, Rafael Costa, Drew Elofson, Luke Fridinger, Taona Mhwandagara, Justin Sehlin, and Oscar Wikström. … Bergmeyer and Mhwandagara have added four tournament singles wins to up their totals to six overall singles wins, one more than Costa and Tyler Haddroff. … As a team, GAC has not lost a singles match in conference play, and boasts a 32-10 mark in dual matches — with 10 of those 12 coming against NCAA Division I Creighton and North Dakota.
• DOUBLING UP: Bergmeyer, Sean Bochman, Alex Budde, Drew Elofson, Daniel Fouchier, Luke Frdlinger, Luke Haddroff, Tyler Haddroff, Mhwandagara, Justin Sehlin, Sourabh Terakanambi, Gage Gohl and Wikström all share the team lead with two doubles wins. … Overall, including tournament play, Elofson and Gohl lead the team with seven wins, one more than Budde, Fouchier, and Terakanambi. … GAC has used 16 different doubles combinations in posting a 17-4 doubles record — including 5-2 at No. 1, and 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 3.
