SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their three-match spring trip sitting at 5-4 overall, including 0-1 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals rallied from a 4-3 deficit with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles — including a three-set marathon win by Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) at No. 5 — to beat Bethany Lutheran 5-4 last Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saint Mary’s has played four of its first nine games on its home court. The Cardinals are 3-1 at the Winona Tennis Center this season, while sporting a 2-3 record on the road. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) collected one of SMU’s three singles wins against Bethany Lutheran last Saturday to push his team-leading dual-match win total to seven — including victories in six of his last seven outings. … Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) is second to Stene with six singles wins, followed by Raabolle with five and E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) with four. … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had 11 singles contests extended to a third set this season — including three in nonconference losses at Northwestern (Minn.) on Feb. 17 and at St. Norbert on Feb. 5.. … SMU is 8-3 in those 11 three-set matches. … SMU closed out the 2022 season owning a 22-23 mark in its 45 three-setters.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Min.) posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Raabolle leads the team in doubles wins with six, going 6-2 — including 4-0 partnered with Rodning and 2-1 playing with Stene. … Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) and Janssen are a perfect 3-0 when paired together. … Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) led the Cardinals with 12 doubles wins last season — all at No. 1.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• TURNING THE TABLES: The Cardinals’ win over Bethany Lutheran last Saturday marked the second straight meeting with the Vikings in which the match ended with a 5-4 decision. BLC beat Saint Mary’s 5-4 a year ago.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 9-0 win over Bethany Lutheran last Saturday, the Cardinals moved to 76-35 in nonconference play since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
CALVIN KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into their nonconference showdown against Saint Mary’s — which kicks off Calvin’s five-match spring trip — riding a season-opening four-game winning streak.
• LAST TIME OUT: Calvin extended its season-opening winning streak to four with back-to-back wins over Milwaukee School of Engineering (6-3) and Ripon (8-1) on Feb. 17.
• HOME (AND ROAD) SUCCESS: The Knights have won two matches on their home courts, while also going 2-0 on the road — beating MSOE and Ripon during their two-match road trip to Wisconsin on Feb. 17.
• SINGLED OUT: Emmanuel Henao Estrada heads into Calvin’s five-match spring trip sporting a perfect 4-0 singles record. Ryan Broek, Stuart Johnston, Corwin Kim, and Adam Zenter are all second to Estrada with three singles victories. … Calvin has used at least two different players in five of the six singles position, the lone exception, No. 6, where Broek has played every match for the Knights.
• DOUBLING UP: Calvin has dropped just one doubles contest this season, going 10-1 in doubles play — led by Zentner/Harrison Sindelar and Kim/Tanner Warners who have teamed to each go 3-0. … Warners leads the Knights with four doubles wins this season.
ADRIAN BULLDOGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bulldogs head into their spring break sporting a 3-2 overall record — sandwiching 7-0 losses to Ohio Northern and Bethel (Ind.) around three straight wins over Manchester (8-1), Anderson (5-4), and Olivet (9-0).
• LAST TIME OUT: Adrian had its three-match winning streak snapped on Sept. 26, falling to Bethel (Ind.) 7-0 in Mishawaka, Ind.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Bulldogs are a perfect 2-0 on their home courts, while ssitting at 1-2 in their three road matches this season.
• SINGLED OUT: Brandon Falk and Sebastian Smith share the team lead in singels wins with two each, while William Coffee, Gabriel Hankey, Luke Holowinski, Whitman Hopper, Zachary Perry, Joey Quigley, Sean Ruhf, and Darren Walter have all recorded one singles victory. … Adrian has had 11 different players compete in the Bulldogs’ four singles matches. … Adrian is 12-16 in singles play thus far this year.
• DOUBLING UP: Falk and Smith have teamed to go 3-1 in doubles play. The pair is the only Adriandoubles combination to win more than one match. … Individually, Falk, Smith, and Ruhf have all collected three doubles wins in four matches, while Quigley owns two victories. … As a team, Adrian is 9-5 in doubles play.
ALBION BRITONS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Albion enters its spring break sitting at .500, posting two wins and two losses through four contests this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Jacob and Josh Doyle picked up Albion’s lone win at No. 3 doubles, as the Britons dropped an 8-1 decision to Greenville on Feb. 18.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Albion has played three of its first four matches on its home court, going 2-1. The Britons — who will play four spring-trip matches in Orlando, Fla., before returning to Albion, Mich., for four more home contests. The Britons are 1-0 in their lone road match this season — a 7-2 win at Manchester on Oct. 4.
• SINGLED OUT: Jacob Doyle leads the Britons with three singles wins in four contests, while Josh Doyle has posted two singles wins, and Brett Gurzell, Drake Malcom, and Brendan Morrison own Albion’s other three singles victories. … As a team, Albion is 8-16 in singles play through four matches.
• DOUBLING UP: Jacob Doyle and Josh Doyle share the team lead in doubles wins with five each, while Gurzell, Malcolm, Morrison, Gabe Peraino, and Brandon Blake have all recorded two wins in doubles play.
