SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s, which closed out its first year under head coach John Tschida in 2022 with a 16-17 overall record, heads into its eight-game spring trip with a 3-1 record.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals collected wins in three of its four nonconference games at the Mankato Dome on Feb. 18-19, beating Crown (8-0), North Central (13-1), and Bethany Lutheran (5-1), while falling to Nebraska Wesleyan (7-6).
• NCAA FOES: The Cardinals have already faced a pair of teams that played in last year’s NCAA tournament — Bethany Lutheran and Nebraska Wesleyan — and will face two more, Cabrini and Alma, during their spring trip.
• 2022 POST-SEASON HONORS: Riley Hall (Dallas Center, Iowa), Sophie Cave (Maplewood, Minn.), and Allison Ciero (Glyn Ellyn, Ill.) were all named First-Team All-MIAC a year ago, while Hall also garnered NFCA All-Region IX Third-Team honors in 2022.
• AT THE PLATE: Ali French (Winona, Minn.) hit a team-best .545 during the Cardinals’ four games in the Mankato Dome, going 6-for-11, while Hall (.429), Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn. / .375), Ciero (.357), and Naleya Bork ( / .300) also hit .300 or better in SMU’s first four games. … As a team, the Cardinals hit .302 through 33 games last season, and boasted six regulars who hit .300 or better — led by Hall (.423) and Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn. / .370).
• RUNNING WILD: The Cardinals scored 183 runs in 33 games a year ago — and picked up right where they left off in 2023, having already scored 32 runs in four games. … Ciero, who scored a team-leading 31 runs last season, has scored five times this season, share the team’s top spot with French.
• HIT PARADE: French has collected a team-leading six hits through four games, followed by Ciero with five, and Hall, Berg, Bork, and Abbie Stigler (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) with three each. … Hall (41) and Ciero (41) shared the team lead in hits a year ago. … Saint Mary’s amassed 68 multiple-hit games in 2022, led by Hall with 14 and Ciero with 12. … Cassie Sutor (Chicago, Ill.) owned the team’s top single-game performance, collecting a career-high four hits against Rosemount on March 5.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Fifteen of the Cardinals’ 33 hits through four games have been for extra bases — including 11 doubles, one triple and three home runs. … French, Bork, and Madison Kindler () have all recorded two doubles, while Hall owns SMU’s lone triple. … The Cardinals recorded 270 hits in 2022, including 76 for extra bases — 58 doubles, 13 triples and five home runs.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s has hit three home runs in its first four games — including career-firsts by French and Bork. Sutor owns the Cardinals’ third round-tripper. … Cave, Erin Sullivan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), Sarah Kraus (Onalaska, Wis.), and Ally Wagner (Altoona, Wis.) accounted for Saint Mary’s five home runs last season.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Nordlund and Stigler each own a team-leading four RBIs, one more than Stigler, French, Berg, Bork, and Kindler. … Hall delivered a team-best 25 RBIs a year ago, followed by Cave with 22 and Ciero with 17. … Saint Mary’s posted 34 multiple-RBI performances last season, led by Cave with six, and Hall and Sullivan with five.
• TOUGH TO STOP: Ciero closed out the season having hit safely in each of the Cardinals’ last nine games, and extended that streak to 12 with hits in SMU’s first three games in 2023, before being held hitless against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 19. … Hall, who had a career-high nine-game hit streak a year ago, enters the spring trip having hit safely in each of SMU’s last three games.
• CAN’T CATCH ME: Saint Mary’s, which stole 70 bases in 2022, has already stolen 21 bases this season – led by Hall (6-for-6) and Ciero (4-for-4). … SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from seven different players.
• OUCH: Hall, who was hit by a pitch 12 times last season — tied for 11th-most in NCAA Division III — has already been hit twice this season. … Hall was hit by three pitches against Rosemont on March 3, tied for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division in 2022.
• IN THE CIRCLE: Saint Mary’s has used five different pitchers this season, with Bork leading the way, tossing 9 2/3 innings, compiling a 1-0 record and a 3.62 ERA. Kraus is second on the staff with 8 2/3 IP (0-1, 0.81 ERA), while Izzy Griffin (0-0, 2.33 ERA, 3.0 IP), Sutor (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.0 IP), and Amy Gappa (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.0 IP) have also seen time in the circle).
• PITCHING FIRSTS: Bork picked up her first pitching win of the season against Bethany Lutheran n Feb. 18, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of a 5-1 Saint Mary’s win.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: Cardinal pitchers have combined to strike out 26 batters through four games, led by Kraus, who has fanned 14 in 8 2/3 innings of work.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals scored a season-high 13 runs in their 13-1, five-inning victory over North Central on Feb.18. … Saint Mary’s has outscored its opponents 19-2 through the game’s first two innings — holding an 8-2 edge in the first inning and an 11-0 advantage in the second. … The Cardinals have held their opponent to two runs or less in three of their first four games. … Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning 13 times — including a season-high seven-run sixth inning in its 12-3 win over Rosemont on March 3 — plated eight first-inning runs and five more in the second against North Central on Feb. 19. … The Cardinals’ 14-10 loss to St. Scholastica in Game 1 on April 21, 2022 marked the first time since the 2012 season — when SMU fell to Cornell 13-10 — that SMU had scored 10 or more runs in a loss. … The 24 combined runs between the Saints and Cardinals on April 21 were the most since Saint Mary’s and Macalester combined for 33 runs in an 18-15 SMU win on April 22, 2015.
