WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and St. Olaf men's tennis teams both took to the Winona Tennis Center courts with their sights set on securing their first conference victory in the young season.
Â
Unfortunately, when the final point was secured, it was the Oles who would leave the courts victorious, dealing Saint Mary's an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday afternoon.
Â
"St. Olaf was tough from top-to-bottom," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We played some solid tennis, but weren't able to get the breaks we needed to pull out the win."
Â
St. Olaf jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with 8-5, 8-5, 8-4 wins in the three doubles matches, and iced the win with wins in five of the six singles matches.
Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) recorded the Cardinals' lone victory, recording a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win at No. 4.
Â
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 7-6 overall) are back in action next weekend, playing host to Concordia in a 1:30 p.m. MIAC matchup at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday, before heading to StayFit in Sartell, Minn., for a noon conference showdown against Saint John's
