WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team took the court Saturday afternoon against St. Olaf hoping to ride the momentum of its back-to-back, spring trip-ending victories.
Â
The Oles, however, had other ideas.
Â
St. Olaf brought the Cardinals' two-match winning streak to a screeching halt, as the Oles dealt SMU a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"Give St. Olaf credit, they were a solid team from top-to-bottom," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We played some good tennis, it just wasn't enough."
Â
The Oles set the tone early, winning the three doubles matches 8-4, 8-3, 8-3, before sealing the win by sweeping the six singles contests — including five in straight sets.
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) rallied from a set down to even her match at No. 2 singles, but fell short in the third set in dropping a 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 decision.
Â
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 5-5 overall) are back in action next weekend, playing host to Concordia in a 1:30 p.m. MIAC matchup at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday, before heading to StayFit in Sartell, Minn., for a 3 p.m. conference showdown against Saint Benedict.
