WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's
Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) didn't get a lot of time to try out his latest moniker as "NABC First-Team All-District 9."
Â
Twenty-four hours, to be exact.
Â
Just a day after becoming the first player in program history to be named to the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) First-Team All-District 9 Team, Anthony was bestowed another program first — first-ever NABC All-American.
Â
Anthony, the reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, was named Second-Team All-American when the NABC unveiled its three All-America Teams on Wednesday.
Â
The 10-player First-, Second- and Third-Team All-America selections are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division III.
Â
The All-American honor is just the latest post-season accolades for the talented senior guard, who was named All-Region 9 and Region 9 Player of the Year by D3hoops.com on Tuesday — not to mention landing All-MIAC and MIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in late February.
Â
Anthony was an offensive juggernaut for the Cardinals this season, leading the team and the conference in scoring with a 24.6 ppg average — leaving him No. 3 in all of NCAA Division III behind E.J. Day of Lasell (25.8 ppg) and Lyle Tipton of Geneva (24.7 ppg). He also pulled down 238 rebounds (9.2 rpg) and collected 120 assists. Anthony finished the year shooting 54.5 percent (235-for-431) from the field and 140-for-177 (79.1%) from the free throw line.
Â
Anthony scored 20+ points in a game 18 times in 2022-23, including six games of 30 or more points — and a pair of career-high 41-point performances. His 41-point showing against both North Park on Dec. 30 and vs. Concordia on Jan. 21 were the highest single-game individual performances since Will Wright netted 41 against MacMurray on Nov. 22, 2008 — and just five shy of the school-record 46 points posted by Ken Jansen against Macalester during the 1956-57 season.
Â
With his field goal at 5:48 of the second half against Finlandia on Jan. 2, Anthony became the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Anthony — who is SMU's first 1,000-point scorer since Eli Cave '21 hit the milestone during the 2020-21 season — closed out his career sitting eighth all-time with 1,390 career points.
Â
Along with his 18 points in SMU's playoff loss to Hamline on Feb. 21, Anthony also hauled in 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the year. The senior collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists.
Â
Anthony was the only player from the MIAC named to one of the three NABC All-America Teams, and was joined on the Second Team by Steven Breeman (Montclair State), Jack Clement (Ohio Wesleyan), Daniel Cook (St. John Fisher), Jackson Danzig (Scranton), Jake Harrison (Western New England), Tate Ivanyo (Anderson), Greg Rowson (Mary Washington), Dylan Thoerner (Tufts), and Calvin Williams IV (St. Thomas).
Â
The NABC First-Team consisted of Levi Borchert (UW-Oshkosh, Tyson Cruickshank (Wheaton), Vinny DeAngelo (Swarthmore), Austin Grunder (SUNY Cortland), Jeff Hunter (Keene St.), Josiah Johnson (Mary Hardin-Baylor), Miles Mallory (Randolph-Macon), Ja'Zere Noel (Rowan), Christian Parker (Mount Union), and Alex Sobel (Middlebury), while the NABC Third-Team included Octavio Brito (Keene State), Ryan Broeckel (Wisconsin Lutheran), E.J. Day (Lasell), Isaiah Geathers (Lehman), Jackson Meshanic (Hobart), Brendan Mora (Pomona-Pitzer), Jalen Overway (Calvin), Myles Rasnick (Maryville), Joshua Van Gorp (Central-Iowa), and Jalen Vaughns (Neumann).
