SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their season-finale against St. Scholastica sitting at 6-10 overall, including a 1-8 showing through nine conference matches.
• LAST TIME OUT: The injury-plagued Cardinals were no match for Bethel on Thursday, as the Royals dealt Saint Mary’s a 9-0 conference setback at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
• WINNING BIG: Eight of SMU’s last 17 wins have been 9-0 sweeps — including three of SMU’s five victories this season — while four other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) enters SMU’s season-finale leading the Cardinals in dual-match singles wins with eight, one more than Becker, and two up on Renwick and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.). … Renwick put together a season-high six-match winning streak a year ago — the longest among Cardinal players — while Henderson and Becker each boasted five-match win streaks.
• WIN NO. 1: Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) picked up her first collegiate singles victory on Feb. 25 against Bethany Lutheran, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
• MIXING THINGS UP: The Cardinals have used at least two different players at all six singles positions this season. Two different SMU players have competed at No. 1 singles, while four have competed from the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 slots, and five have lined up in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles team of Dosser/Henderson has teamed up to record a team-leading seven doubles wins, two more than Becker/Renwick. … Becker has played 15 of SMU’s 16 matches at No. 2 doubles, going 5-6 with Renwick and 2-2 with Boomgaarden. … SMU has used 13 different doubles combinations this season. … As a team, the Cardinals are 19-29 in doubles play — going 7-9 at No. 1 and No. 2, and 5-11 at No. 3.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals are 10-8 in their last 18 home matches — including 4-4 this season. … SMU has picked up 14 of its last 20 wins at the Winona TC.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• DOMINATION: With their Feb. 25 win over Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals improved to 10-0 all-time against the Vikings — with all 10 matches ending in 9-0 sweeps.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Thanks to their spring-trip victories over Adrian and Albion, the Cardinals improved to 78-21 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
