SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference-opening doubleheader against Hamline sitting at 6-8 overall through the first 14 games of the 2023 season
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals got their offense on track in the second game of their nonconference doubleheader against UW-La Crosse on March 26, but a six-run effort was not enough, as the Eagles dealt SMU 7-0 and 9-6 setbacks in Saint Mary’s home opener.
• NCAA FOES: The Cardinals have already faced four teams — Bethany Lutheran, Nebraska Wesleyan, Cabrini, and Alma — that played in the NCAA tournament a year ago.
• AT THE PLATE: The Cardinals boast five regulars who are hitting above .300 through 14 games, led by Naleya Bork’s (De Pere, Wis.) team-best .395 batting average. Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn. / .393), Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn. / .382), Savannah Swanson (Marengo, Ill. / .375), and Zoe Fink (Eau Claire, Wis. / .333) are the others. … As a team, SMU is hitting .298 through 14 games.
• RUNNING WILD: After scoring 183 runs in 33 games a year ago, Saint Mary’s has already plated 75 runs through 14 games this season. … Riley Hall (Dallas Center, Iowa) has scored a team-leading 16 times, while Ciero has also reached double figures with 11 runs scored.
• HIT PARADE: Bork has racked up a team-leading 15 hits, one more than Ciero, while Nordlund (13), Berg (11), Hall (11), and Abbie Stigler (Menomonie, Wis. / 11) have also reached double figures in hits this season. … Ciero has already put together five multiple-hit games this season, while French owns the team’s only four-hit performance — going 4-for-4 in a season-opening 8-0 win over Crown on Feb. 18. … Cassie Sutor (Chicago, Ill.) owned the team’s top single-game performance in 2022, collecting a career-high four hits against Rosemount on March 5.

• GOING YARD: After delivering just five home runs a year ago, Saint Mary’s has already launched seven round-trippers this season. Bork leads the team with two HRs, with Nordlund, Stigler, Sutor, Jada Allen (Stevens Point, Wis.), and Ali French (Winona, Minn.) own the other five. … The home runs by Bork, Nordlund, Stigler, and French were all collegiate firsts.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Nordlund and Bork have each reached double figures in RBIs through 14 games, with Nordlund leading the way with 11, one more than Bork. Stigler is third with nine RBIs. … Nordlund has amassed a team-leading four multiple-RBI games, with Bork owning three, and Stigler, Berg, and Sutor two.
• TOUGH TO STOP: Ciero closed out the 2022 season having hit safely in each of the Cardinals’ last nine games, and extended that streak to 12 with hits in SMU’s first three games in 2023, before being held hitless against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 19. … Fink and Berg share the team’s longest active hit streak at four. … Bork, meanwhile, has reached base safely in each of the team’s last 10 games.
• CAN’T CATCH ME: Saint Mary’s, which stole 70 bases in 2022, has already stolen 43 bases this season – led by Hall (11-for-11), Ciero (7-8), and Stigler (6-8a). … SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from 11 different players.
• OUCH: Hall, who was hit by a pitch 12 times last season — tied for 11th-most in NCAA Division III — has already been hit five times this season. … Hall was hit by three pitches against Rosemont on March 3, tied for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division in 2022.
• IN THE CIRCLE: Saint Mary’s has used five different pitchers this season, with Bork leading the way, tossing 41.0 innings, compiling a 2-4 record and a 3.41 ERA. Sarah Kraus (Onalaska, Wis.) is second on the staff with 39.0 IP (1-5, 3.41 ERA), while Izzy Griffin (0-0, 2.33 ERA, 3.0 IP), Sutor (1-0, 1.50 ERA, 4 2/3 IP), and Amy Gappa (Trempealeau, Wis. / 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP) have also seen time in the circle). … Kraus has accounted for three of the team’s five complete games, with Bork tossing the other two. … Kraus and Bork have each made a team-leading nine pitching appearances.
• PITCHING FIRSTS: Bork picked up her first pitching win of the season against Bethany Lutheran n Feb. 18, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of a 5-1 Saint Mary’s win.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: Cardinal pitchers have combined to strike out 69 batters through 14 games, led by Kraus (33) and Bork (22). … Bork struck out a career-high 10 batters in the Cardinals’ 8-3 win over Houghton on Feb. 27. The 10 strikeouts were the most by a Cardinal pitcher since Amber Chow fanned 10 against Gustavus on April 17, 2021.
• WEEKLY HONORS: Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn.) was named MIAC Player of the Week on March 6, after hitting .500 (10-for-20), with a double and a home run, in SMU’s eight spring trip games. It was the first weekly honor for the Cardinal sophomore.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have outscored their first 14 opponents 75-56 — including 19-6 in the second inning. … SMU has scored 10 or more runs in a game twice, highlighted by a season-high 13-run effort in its 13-1, five-inning victory over North Central on Feb.18. … Saint Mary’s is 5-1 in games decided by five or more runs, but 0-3 in one- or two-run games. … The Cardinals have held their opponent to two runs or less in five of their six wins. On the flip side, SMU is 0-5 when failing to plate more than two runs. … Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning 13 times last season — including a season-high seven-run sixth inning in its 12-3 win over Rosemont on March 3, 2022 — has scored four or more runs in an inning five times this season. • FOR THE RECORD: Hamline heads into its conference-opening doubleheader at Saint Mary’s sitting at 6-7-1 overall through its first 14 games.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Pipers have not played since closing out their spring trip to Clermont, Fla., with a pair of nonconference losses on March 18. HU dropped an 8-2 decision to Wesleyan and a 4-1 decision to UW-Oshkosh.
• LIMPING IN: Hamline heads into its matchup against Saint Mary’s having dropped its last four games — all during its 10-game spring trip to Clermont, Fla. HU has lost to Southern Maine (6-1), Washington (Md.) (7-3), Wesleyan (8-2), and UW-Oshkosh (4-1) during its four-game slide.
• FIT TO BE TIED: The Pipers kicked off their 10-game spring trip to Clermont, Fla., with a 6-6 tie against North Park. The teams were deadlocked in the eighth inning when the game was called due to weather. It was Hamline’s first tie since battling Rutgers-Camden to a 3-3 stalemate on March 21, 2014.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Hamline heads into conference play hitting .282 as a team, while boasting three regulars who are hitting above .300. Jenna Rubbelke leads the Pipers with a .419 batting average — going 18-for-43 in 13 games — while Maddie Johnson (.353) and Savannah Johnson (.350) are also sporting batting averages north of .300.
• ON THE RUN: The Pipers have three players who have scored 10 or more runs through the team’s first 14 games. Josephine Cariveau leads the way for HU with 11 runs scored, one more than both Rubbelke and Maddie Johnson. … Cariveau scored a single-game season-high four runs against Farmingdale State on March 16.
• HIT PARADE: Rubbelke has banged out a team-leading 18 hits this season, followed by Cariveau, Maddie Johnson, and Gabby Cook with 12, and Abbey Herbert and Raelyn Costley with 10. … Rubbelke collected a single-game, season-high four hits against Northwestern on Feb. 25. … Cariveau, Cook, Maddie Johnson, and Rubbelke have all posted four multiple-hit games this season.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Twenty-one of the Pipers’ 107 hits this season have been for extra bases, including 13 doubles, five triples, and three home runs. … Herbert has racked up a team-leading four doubles, two more than Rubbelke, Cariveau, and Gabby Tuhy, while Neyla Olwine leads the squad with a pair of triples.
• BOMBS AWAY: Hamline’s three home runs this season have come by three different players — Herbert, Cook, and Kiana Island.
• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Cook leads the Pipers with nine RBIs, followed by Cariveau and Tuhy with seven, and Herbert and Rubbelke with six. … Cook posted a four-RBI effort against St. Joseph’s on March 14. … Cariveau and Cook have each posted two multiple-RBI games, accounting for four of HU’s multiple-RBI performances.
• STREAKING ALONG: Rubbelke put together a team-high nine-game hitting streak earlier this season, but the Pipers do not have an active hit streak longer than two games heading into their showdown against Saint Mary’s. … Rubbelke has reached base safely in all 13 games she’s played this season.
• ON THE MOUND: Hamline has used four different pitchers this season, with three of them logging more than 18 innings. Dana Rosbacka (3-1, 3.00 ERA) has tossed a team-leading 37 1/3 innings, followed by Montana Miller (2-4, 3.82 ERA) and Sophie Stork (1-2, 4.50 ERA) with 33.0 and 18 2/3 IP. … Rosbacka and Miller both lead the HU pitching staff with five starts, eight appearances, and three complete games.

• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Hamline has scored four or more runs in five of its six wins — the lone exception, a 2-0 victory over Washington College on March 14.
