SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference doubleheader against Concordia sitting at 16-14 overall, including 8-6 through its first 14 MIAC contests.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals battled to a split against Gustavus on April 23 in St. Peter, Minn., rebounding from a 7-4, Game 1 loss with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. Ali French (Winona, Minn.).

• HOW SWEEP IT IS: Saint Mary’s has picked up sweeps in three of its last four doubleheaders. SMU swept past UW-River Falls 5-4 and 5-3 on April 13 and dispatched of St. Scholastica by identical 8-0 counts the following afternoon, before cruising past Macalester 9-6 and 5-2 on April 16. The sweep streak ended with last Sunday’s split against Gustavus. 

• AT THE PLATE: As a team, Saint Mary’s enters its DH against Augsburg hitting .308 through 30 games, and boasts six regulars who are hitting above .300. … Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) leads the way with a .397 batting average, followed by Ali French (Winona, Minn. / .386), Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn. / .357), Riley Hall (Dallas Center, Iowa / .321), Naleya Bork (De Pere, Wis. / .314), and Abbie Stigler (Menomonie, Wis. / .305).

• RUNNING WILD: Saint Mary’s has plated 161 runs through 30 games this season. … Hall has scored a team-leading 33 runs, while Stigler (20), Bork (17), Allison Ciero (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / 17), French (10), and Cassie Sutor (Chicago, Ill. / 10) have also reached double digits in runs scored. … SMU has had a player score three runs in a game three times this season.

• GOING YARD: After delivering just five home runs a year ago, Saint Mary’s has already launched 13 round-trippers this season. Bork and Hall lead the team with three HRs, Stigler (2), Berg, Nordlund, Cassie Sutor (Chicago, Ill.), French, and Jada Allen (Stevens Point, Wis.) owning the other seven. … The home runs by Berg, Bork, Nordlund, Stigler, Hall, Allen, and French were all collegiate firsts.

• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Nordlund, Bork, Berg, Ciero, Stigler, and French have all reached double figures in RBIs through 30 games. Nordlund leads the way with 21 RBIs, two more than Bork, with Berg (17), Stigler (13), Ciero (13), and French (10) also owning 10+ RBIs. … Nordlund has amassed a team-leading six multiple-RBI games, with Bork owning five, and Ciero and Berg with four each.

• STREAKING: Nordlund heads into SMU’s DH against Concordia owning the team’s longest active hitting streak and six. … Hall has reached base safely in 17 straight games, while Berg has been on base in 15 consecutive games.

• CAN’T CATCH ME: Saint Mary’s has posted 73 stolen bases in 89 attempts this season – led by Hall (18-for-18), Ciero (13-for-15), and Stigler (12-for-14). … SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from 16 different players.

• OUCH: Hall has been hit by a pitch 15 times this season — putting her tied for third among NCAA Division III players. … Hall was hit by three pitches against Rosemont on March 3, tied for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division in 2022.

• IN THE CIRCLE: Saint Mary’s has used five different pitchers this season, led by Sarah Kraus (Onalaska, Wis. / 6-7, 3.67 ERA) and Bork (5-6, 3.25 ERA), who have logged 91 2/3 and 71.0 innings, respectively. … Sutor (2-0, 2.56 ERA, 13 2/3 IP), Izzy Griffin (West St. Paul, Minn. / 1-1, 4.08 ERA, 12.0 IP), and Amy Gappa (Trempealeau, Wis. / 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 9 1/3 IP) have also seen time in the circle. … Kraus has tossed a team-high nine complete games, three more than Bork, while also leading the team with 18 pitching appearances.

•  PITCHING FIRSTS: ?Griffin picked up her first collegiate win, and her first collegiate shutout — in her first collegiate start — in a 2-0 victory over Carleton on April 8. ... Bork recorded her first pitching win as a Cardinal against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 18, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of a 5-1 Saint Mary’s win.

• FANNING THE FLAMES: Cardinal pitchers have combined to strike out 108 batters through 30 games, led by Kraus (49) and Bork (39). … Bork struck out a career-high 10 batters in the Cardinals’ 8-3 win over Houghton on Feb. 27. The 10 strikeouts were the most by a Cardinal pitcher since Amber Chow fanned 10 against Gustavus on April 17, 2021.

• MIAC WEEKLY HONORS: Nordlund was named MIAC Player of the Week on March 6, after hitting .500 (10-for-20), with a double and a home run, in SMU’s eight spring trip games. It was the first weekly honor for the Cardinal sophomore.

• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 161-127 — including each of the game’s first five innings … SMU has scored 10 or more runs in a game twice, highlighted by a season-high 13-run effort in its 13-1, five-inning victory over North Central on Feb.18. … Saint Mary’s is 9-3 in games decided by five or more runs, but are 4-6 in one- or two-run games. … The Cardinals have held their opponent to two runs or less in 10 of their 16 wins. • FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into their home doubleheader against Saint Mary’s sitting at 5-30 overall, while managing just one win in 19 conference contests.

• LAST TIME OUT: Concordia dropped both ends of its MIAC doubleheader against Carleton on Sunday in Moorhead, Minn., falling to the Knights 6-4 in eight innings in Game 1, before struggling in the nightcap, losing 13-3 in five innings.

• LIMPING IN: With their losses to Carleton on Sunday, Concordia heads into its DH against Saint Mary’s mired in a 16-game losing streak. CC has now won since beating St. Scholastica 7-4 in the first game of their MIAC doubleheader on April 10. … The Cobbers are just 1-21 in their last 22 contests, the lone win that 7-4 victory over CSS. 

• LEADING THE CHARGE: Concordia heads into its showdown with Saint Mary’s boasting two players who are hitting above .300 this season. Karissa Finnigan leads the way for the Cobbers, going 19-for-48 for a .396 batting average, while Hailey Pangracs is also sitting north of .300 with a .338 average. Molly Wilde and Kate Wehsloff are just percentage points away from joining the pair, sitting at .298 and .293, respectively..

• ON THE RUN: Pangracs and Wilde share the team lead in runs scored with 15, one more than Kailee Falconer, while Reese Hauck (12) and Kate Gulbranson (10) have also reached double figures in runs scored. … Hauck and Falconer have both scored a season-high three runs in a game this season. … Concordia scored a season-high 13 runs in a 14-13 loss to St. Catherine on April 23.
