SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals closed out the 2022 season sitting at 11-5-2 overall, including closing out conference play with a 6-3-2 in conference mark.
• IN THE POSTSEASON: The Cardinals locked up their second-straight MIAC Playoff berth last season, falling to St. Olaf 2-1 in the quarterfinals. SMU made its first MIAC Playoff appearance in program history in 2021, beating St. Scholastica on penalty kicks in the opening round, before falling to Saint Benedict 3-2 in the semifinals.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals went 6-1-2 in their eight home games last season and are 11-2-4 in their last 16 home games. SMU closed out the season 5-5-0 away from Ochrymowycz Field a year ago.
• STREAKING ALONG: The Cardinals’ 2-1 loss to St. Olaf in the MIAC Playoffs on Nov. 1 snapped their season-high six-game winning streak. Saint Mary’s closed out the year 9-2-2 in their last 13 games last season, with both losses coming at the hands of St. Olaf.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Fourteen of Saint Mary’s 19 games last season were decided by shutout — including nine of SMU’s 11 wins. The Cardinals beat UM-Morris (3-0), Lawrence (2-0), Gustavus (1-0), UW-Stout (1-0), UW-Stevens Point (2-0), Grinnell (2-0), Hamline (2-0), and Macalester (2-0), while falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), Saint Benedict (3-0), and St. Olaf (3-0), and tying Augsburg (0-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals had five players record their first collegiate goals last season — the most recent off the foot of Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) against Grinnell on Oct. 19. Along with Leonard’s tally, Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah), Malerie Williams (Osseo, Minn.), Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.), and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) have also scored their first goals in an SMU uniform this season.
• LEADER OF THE PACK: Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) closed out 2022 leading the team in goals with five, one more than Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.). Skoruppa and Munson finished third on the team with three goals, followed by Lahart and Leonard with two each. Capacio, Williams, Megan Trindle (Castle Rock, Colo.), and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) owned SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Leonard collected her third and fourth assists of the season against Bethel on Oct. 15, pushing her past Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) and into the team lead in assists. Ashe and Falkman were second with three helpers, followed by Williams with two, while McKinney and Skoruppa have also collected an assist this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading five goals, Falkman led the team in points with 13 (5 G, 3 A), four in front of McKinney (4 G, 1 A) and five in front of Leonard (2 G, 4 A). Skoruppa is sitting fourth with seven points (3 G, 1 A), with Munson (3 G, 0 A) next up with six points.
• NETTING THE GAME-WINNER: Falkman and McKinney accounted for seven of the team’s 11 game-winning goals. Falkman led the team with four, followed by McKinney with three. Munson, Lahart, Capacio, and Trindle owned SMU’s other three game-winners.
• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Falkman’s two-goal effort against Concordia on Oct. 1 marked the second time in her career that she has scored two goals in a game. Along with her two-goal game against the Cobbers, Falkman also recorded her first multiple-assist effort last season, picking up helpers on two of SMU’s three goals against UM-Morris on Sept. 1. … Leonard and Ashe both recorded their first collegiate two-assist games last season: Leonard assisted on both SMU goals against Bethel on Oct. 15, while Ashe collected two helpers against Concordia on Oct. 1. … Skoruppa posted her first career three-point game with a goal and an assist against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) appeared in 18 of SMU’s 19 games in goal last season — including 16 starts — owning a 0.94 goals-against-average and .839 save percentage. … Nguyen picked up her sixth shutout of the season with a six-save effort against Macalester on Oct. 25 and did not have to make a save en route to shutout No. 7 against St. Scholastica four days later. Nguyen closed out her four-year collegiate career with 16 shutouts — ranking fifth in program history. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has appeared in four games (185:05 minutes) — including two starts — and has not allowed a goal, stopping all 13 shots she’s faced, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) has stopped nine of the 10 shots she faced in her two appearance in goal (45:00 minutes).
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen made a career-high 12 saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against St. Catherine on Sept. 24. It was the second time she stopped 10 or more shots in a game last season, having posted a 10-save effort against Saint Benedict on Sept. 17. … Nguyen made 10 or more saves in each of the Cardinals’ last two meetings against St. Catherine, owning 10 saves in last season’s 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• NEW DAY, SAME OUTCOME: Saint Mary’s 2-0 victory over Macalester on Oct. 25 was the Cardinals’ fourth straight 2-0 victory — SMU had beaten UW-Stevens Point, Grinnell, and Hamline by that same 2-0 outcome in its previous three contests.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 2-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 1, the Cardinals have now won four straight against the Cobbers — all by one goal. In fact, each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been settled by one goal or less, with SMU going 4-2-1 in those seven contests.
• NO GOALS: Saint Mary’s 0-0 tie against Augsburg on Oct. 8 was its third 0-0 tie in the last two seasons. The Cardinals battled both Saint Benedict and St. Scholastica to 0-0 draws a year ago.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals scored 15 of their 22 goals a year ago in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents owned a 228-196 advantage in shot attempts — including 117-86 in shots on goal. … SMU recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (23), and shots on goal (11) in its 3-0, season-opening win over UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
UMN MORRIS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cougars enter their 2023 season-opener on the heels of a 4-12-3 season a year ago, including a 4-7-3 mark in 14 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contests.
• POSITIVE FINISH: UMN Morris closed out the 2022 campaign with a 3-0 conference win over Northland on Oct. 29. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak in which the Cougars were outscored 15-2.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cougars picked up two of their four wins last season on their home field. UM-Morris finished the year 2-7-1 at home, while going 2-5-2 away from Cougar Field.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Eleven of the Cougars’ 19 games in 2022 were decided by shutout. UM-Morris defeated North Central (2-0) and Northland (3-0), while falling to Saint Mary’s (3-0), Augsburg (8-0), Crown (4-0), UW-Superior (2-0), Bethany Lutheran (5-0), St. Catherine (8-0), and Martin Luther (1-0). The Cougars also battled Northwestern and Northland to 0-0 stalemates.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: The Cougars’ season-opener against Saint Mary’s is the first of XXX games against the MIAC this season. UM-Morris went 0-4-0 in its four matchups against MIAC opponents a year ago, being outscoring 26-2.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: UMN Morris’s 26 goals in 2022 came from seven different players, led by Monica Calderon with nine. Kim Peters chipped in six goals, followed by Bella Toth with four, Harper Toward with three, and Jodyn Sondrol, Matteya Borah, and Kate Obright with one each.
• NETTING THE GAME-WINNER: The Cougars’ four game-winning goals last season came from four different players — Calderon, Peters, Sondrol, and Toth.
• PK PERFECTION: UMN Morris was a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kicks last season, with Toward converting all three.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Calderon and Toward shared the team lead in assists with six last season, while Peters was third on the team with four. Sondrol chipped in three helpers, and Borah and Maddie Schneider each collected two.
• POINT PRODUCTION: UMN Morris closed out the 2022 season with three players owning 10or more points, led by Calderon with 24. Peters (16) and Toward (12) also hit double digits in points a year ago, while Toth was fourth on the team with nine points. … Calderon posted a season-high eight points — three goals and two assists — against North Central on Sept. 22.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Bernadette Cienik started all 19 games in goal for the Cougars — and played all but 6:06 minutes. Cienik compiled a 3.28 goals-against-average and a .744 save percentage. … Cienik, who stopped 180 of the 242 shots she faced, stopped 10 or more shots in a game nine times last season — including a season-high 18-save effort against Augsburg on Sept. 4.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: UMN Morris was outscored 62-26 last season, surrendering a season-high eight goals twice in 8-0 losses to Augsburg and St. Catherine. … UM-Morris was outshot 498-209 in 19 games a year ago, including 248-110. … The Cougars recorded season highs in goals (7), assists (8), and points (22) in a 7-0 win over North Central on Sept. 22. …
