SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference game at Lawrence sitting at 3-3-2 overall including 0-2-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) converted a penalty kick late in the second half and Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) stopped a career-high 13 shots in leading the Cardinals to a come-from-behind 1-1 tie with Nebraska Wesleyan last Sunday.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games, the Cardinals are in the midst of playing three of four games on their home turf. SMU has picked up four of its last six wins on its home field. The Cardinals are 2-1-1 at Ochrymowycz Field this season.
• CLOSE CALLS: Twenty-seven of the Cardinals’ last 38 games have been decided by one goal or less — including six of SMU’s eight games this season.
• FIT TO BE TIED: For the second year in a row, the Cardinals have played to a scoreless tie this season. Saint Mary’s and Wisconsin Lutheran battled to a scoreless deadlock on Sept. 3. … The Cardinals’ three ties last season — including a 0-0 deadlock against Concordia on Oct. 1 — were the most since the 2015 season, when Saint Mary’s finished the year with three ties en route to a 6-9-3 overall record.
• CAREER GAMES: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.) each scored their first — and second — collegiate goals in SMU’s season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
• CAREER GAMES II: Rojan Monger (St. Paul, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win over Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 6, while Diego Giles (Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored his first goal as a Cardinal against Simpson three days later.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: With his goal against Saint John’s last Saturday, Hare pushed his team-leading total to four, one more than Adamek and Hurley, while Monger and Giles own SMU’s other two goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his four goals, Hare has also assisted on all three of Adamek’s goals, while Monger, Giles, Barick Makabi (Iowa City, Iowa) and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) have also collected helpers this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: With his four goals and three assists, Hare sits atop the Cardinals’ points lead with nine. Adamek and Hurley are second on the squad with six points each (3 G), followed by Monger (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts) and Giles (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts)..
• PLENTY OF PKs: With his PK goal against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday, Hurley has now accounted for six of SMU’s last seven penalty-kick goals — going 3-for-3 this season and 3-for-4 a year ago. … Hurley’s six career PK goals put him No. 1 in program history, two more than Eli Szymanski.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) has started seven of the Cardinals’ eight games this season, compiling a 1.35 goals-against-average and an .811 save percentage. … Sessler led the MIAC in saves last season with 119, and has stopped 43 of the 53 shots he’s faced this season.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Sessler’s seven-save shutout against Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 3 was the fourth of his collegiate career. The senior had one shutout in each of his first three seasons — including a 12-save performance in blanking Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022.
• BUSY NIGHTS: Sessler, who made 10 or more saves four times in 2022, stopped a career-high 13 shots in last Sunday’s 1-1 tie against Nebraska Wesleyan. Sessler had made 12 saves in a game four times in his four-year collegiate career.
• OFF AND RUNNING: With their 4-0 victory over Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 4-0 win against Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals are now a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against Martin Luther, and have outscored the Knights 30-2 in those eight meetings. … Saint Mary’s five goals in last year’s 5-2 win over the Knights were a season high — and the most goals scored in a game since netting five against MLC in a 5-0 win in 2021.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored seven of their 12 goals this season in the first half. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted four goals in the first half and six after the intermission. … Saint Mary’s has attempted 78 shots in eight games, including 36 on goal, while the Cardinals’ opponents have taken 121 shots, with 56 reaching their target. … SMU netted a season-high four goals in its season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
LAWRENCE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into their nonconference home game against Saint Mary’s still searching for their first winning, sitting at 0-4-3 through the season’s first seven games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Monmouth scored the game-tying goal 11 minutes into the second half, as the Scots battled Lawrence to a 2-2 tie in the teams’ Midwest Conference opener last Saturday in Appleton, Wis.
• HOME COOKING: Wednesday’s nonconference game against Saint Mary’s is the third straight home game for the Vikings, who are in the midst of playing six of their first eight contests on their home field. LU is 0-2-3 at home, while dropping both of its games away from the Banta Bowl.
• FIT TO BE TIED: The Vikings enter Wednesday’s showdown with Saint Mary’s having played to a draw in each of their last two games. Lawrence and Illinois Institute of Technology battled to a 1-1 stalemate on Sept. 20, with the Vikings and Monmouth tying 2-2 three days later. All told, Lawrence has played to three ties this season — also drawing with Lakeland 1-1 on Sept. 7.
• MISSING OFFENSE: Lawrence has not scored a goal in any of its four losses, being outscored 14-0 in losses to Concordia-WI (6-2), Edgewood (2-0), Hamline (2-0), and Viterbo (4-0).
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: Rodrigo Angulo has accounted for two of Lawrence’s four goals this season, with Alexander Resendiz and Eamon Rougvie netting the other two.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Ian Salim and Evan Toth have been credited with the Vikings’ two assists this season.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Nason Lancina and Ethan Uribe have shared the goalkeeping duties this season. Lancina has compiled a 2.86 goals-against-average and .667 save percentage in four appearances (315:00 minutes), while Uribe boasts a 2.40 GAA and .742 save percentage in four games (399:59 minutes). … Uribe has made a team-high 23 saves, three more than Lancina. … Lancina made a season-high seven saves against Hamline on Sept. 9, while Uribe posted a season-best nine-save effort against IIT on Sept. 20.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Lawrence has attempt3ed 54 shots through seven games, including 20 shots on goal, while the Vikings’ opponents have attempted 123 shots, with 61 on goal. … The Vikings have scored all four of their goals in the first half, while their opponents have netted 10 goals in the first half and eight after the intermission. … Lawrence’s two goals in last Saturday’s 2-2 tie with Monmouth were a season high. On the flip side, the Vikings have surrendered four or more goals in a game twice — falling to Viterbo 4-0 and Concordia-WI 6-0. … Lawrence also set season-highs for assists (2), points (6), shots (13), and shots on goal (7) against the Scots last Saturday.
