SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their Saturday conference showdown against Concordia sitting at 4-2-2 overall, including 0-2-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) scored goals, as the Cardinals held off Lawrence to earn a 2-1 nonconference win over the Vikings Wednesday in Appleton, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games, the Cardinals are in the midst of playing three of four games on their home turf. SMU has picked up four of its last six wins on its home field. The Cardinals are 2-1-1 at Ochrymowycz Field this season.
• CLOSE CALLS: Twenty-eight of the Cardinals’ last 39 games have been decided by one goal or less — including seven of SMU’s nine games this season.
• FIT TO BE TIED: For the second year in a row, the Cardinals have played to a scoreless tie this season. Saint Mary’s and Wisconsin Lutheran battled to a scoreless deadlock on Sept. 3. … The Cardinals’ three ties last season — including a 0-0 deadlock against Concordia on Oct. 1 — were the most since the 2015 season, when Saint Mary’s finished the year with three ties en route to a 6-9-3 overall record.
• CAREER GAMES: Saint Mary’s boasts three players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season. Rojan Monger (St. Paul, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win over Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 6, while Diego Giles (Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored his first goal as a Cardinal against Simpson three days later, and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) found the back of the net for the first time against Lawrence on Wednesday.
• CAREER GAMES II: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.) each scored their first — and second — collegiate goals in SMU’s season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: With his goal against Saint John’s on Sept. 23, Hare pushed his team-leading total to four, one more than Adamek and Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.), while Monger, Giles, Palislamovic, and Garr own SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his four goals, Hare has also assisted on all three of Adamek’s goals, while Monger, Giles, Garr, Hurley, Barick Makabi (Iowa City, Iowa) and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) have also collected helpers this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: With his four goals and three assists, Hare sits atop the Cardinals’ points lead with nine. Hurley is second on the squad with seven points (3 G, 1 A), one more than Adamek (3 G), followed by Monger (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts), Giles (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts), and Garr (1 G, 1 A).
• PLENTY OF PKs: With his PK goal against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 24, Hurley has now accounted for six of SMU’s last seven penalty-kick goals — going 3-for-3 this season and 3-for-4 a year ago. … Hurley’s six career PK goals put him No. 1 in program history, two more than Eli Szymanski.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) has started seven of the Cardinals’ nine games this season, compiling a 1.35 goals-against-average and an .811 save percentage. … Sessler led the MIAC in saves last season with 119, and has stopped 43 of the 53 shots he’s faced this season. … Jason Marcus (Gresham, Ore.) did not have to face a shot in his first collegiate start against Lawrence on Wednesday, while Ryan Horlock (Batavia, Ill.) also made his first collegiate appearance against the Vikings, playing the game’s final 45 minutes.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Sessler’s seven-save shutout against Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 3 was the fourth of his collegiate career. The senior had one shutout in each of his first three seasons — including a 12-save performance in blanking Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022.
• BUSY NIGHTS: Sessler, who made 10 or more saves four times in 2022, stopped a career-high 13 shots in last Sunday’s 1-1 tie against Nebraska Wesleyan. Sessler had made 12 saves in a game four times in his four-year collegiate career.
• OFF AND RUNNING: With their 4-0 victory over Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 4-0 win against Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals are now a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against Martin Luther, and have outscored the Knights 30-2 in those eight meetings. … Saint Mary’s five goals in last year’s 5-2 win over the Knights were a season high — and the most goals scored in a game since netting five against MLC in a 5-0 win in 2021.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored eight of their 13 goals this season in the first half. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted four goals in the first half and seven after the intermission. … Saint Mary’s has attempted 103 shots in nine games, including 44 on goal, while the Cardinals’ opponents have taken 127 shots, with 57 reaching their target. … SMU netted a season-high four goals in its season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.

CC opened the season with a 2-1 win over the University of Dubuque, and followed that up with a loss to Loras (4-1), a win over UMN Morris (5-0), a loss to Nebraska Wesleyan (2-1), a win over St. Scholastica (2-1), a loss to Carleton (10-0), a win over Dakota Wesleyan (2-1), and a tie with Hamline (2-2).
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: Leo Dunor has scored a team-high five goals through the Cobbers’ first nine games, one more than both Gannon Brooks and Owen Gallo. The trio have accounted for 13 of the team’s 16 goals this season, with Yonas Adams, Kai Black, and #Edwin Rasidovic netting the other three.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Dunor, Adams, and Matthew Nemer share the team lead with two assists each, with Brooks, Mason Weigel, Gavin Groshelle, Cameron Bolinske, and Matthew Niblock all collecting one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: With his five goals and two assists, Dunor sits atop the Cobbers’ points race with 12, three more than Brooks and four in front of Gallo.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jensen Waltz has started all nine games, and has played all but 21 minutes in goal for the Cobbers, compiling a 2.28 goals-against-average and a .730 save percentage. … Jensen has stopped 54 of the 75 shots he’s faced and owns one shutout.
