WINONA, Minn. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's tenins team played a matched decided by a 9-0 sweep.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, this time around, they were on the wrong side of the 9-0 decision.
Saint Mary's, coming off a 9-0 win over Crown on Friday — a win in which the Cardinals did not lose a game in any of the nine contests — could not keep pace with high-powered Gustavus Saturday afternoon, as the Gusties dealt SMU a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I am so proud of the fight the ladies put forth today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Gustavus is a very powerful team, and I thought we put up a good fight. Natalie (Peterson) had a phenomenal performance at No. 1 singles, it was a great effort."
The Gusties lost just three games in sweeping the three doubles matches, winning 8-0, 8-1, and 8-2, and picked up straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches, with
Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) going to a third set, before falling to GAC's Allison Szalay, 2-6, 6-1, 12-10 in a marathon match at No. 1.
The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 3-2 overall) are right back in action — and right back in conference play — on Sunday, playing host to Carleton in a 3 p.m. matfch at the Winona Tennis Center.
