SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their second four-game stint at the Maverick Dome boasting a perfect 4-0 record.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s breezed to its first three wins of the season — dropping Northwestern 7-3, and needing just five innings to dump UW-La Crosse (9-1) and North Central (22-1) — before collecting a nail-biting 4-2 win over Nebraska Wesleyan during last weekend’s Bethany Lutheran Invitational.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Makayla Steffes (Winona, Minn.) and Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals last weekend, hitting .615 and .538 respectively. … Lizzie Pike ( / .375) and Ali French (Winona, Minn. / .364) also hit above .300 during SMU’s four games in Mankato, Minn., last weekend. … As a team, Saint Mary’s closed out the 2023 season hitting .310 through 39 games, led by French with a .424 batting average.
• ON THE RUN: Saint Mary’s erupted for 42 runs in its four games last weekend — including a season-high 22-run outburst in routing North Central 22-1 last Saturday. … SMU’s 22 runs against North Central were the most in a game since plating 27 against Mount Marty College on March 20, 2009. … Steffes led the way for SMU last weekend, scoring five times, one more than Pike and French.
• HIT PARADE: SMU banged out 40 hits in its four wins last weekend, and got at least one hit from 15 different players. … Steffes recorded a team-leading eight hits in 13 at-bats, followed by Berg with seven, and French and Breonna Methner (Woodbury, Minn.) with four each. … Steffes had at least two hits in three of SMU’s four games last weekend. … Steffes, Berg, Methner, and Megan McGinnis (Appleton, Wis.) all own a career-high three-hit game.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: The Cardinals delivered six extra-base hits last weekend. Berg belted a pair of doubles, while Steffes had a double and a triple, French had a double, and Pike owned the other triple.
• BOMBS AWAY: Berg launched Saint Mary’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot against Northwestern last Friday. … Saint Mary’s belted 16 round-trippers in 2023.
• DRIVING ‘EM HOME: Berg delivered seven RBIs in four games last weekend — including three against UW-La Crosse and a career-high four against Northwestern. French and Pike each chipped in four RBIs over the weekend.
• STREAKING ALONG: French, who closed out the 2023 season hitting safely in each of the Cardinals’ last 12 games, extended that streak to 16 with hits in all four games last weekend. Berg and Steffes also have had at least one his in all four SMU games this season.
• CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Saint Mary’s swiped six bases on seven attempts last weekend, led by Steffes, who went 3-for-4 in the stolen base department. … Saint Mary’s posted 92 stolen bases in 112 attempts last season — and got at least one stolen base from 17 different players.
• IN THE CIRCLE: Steffes logged a team-leading 13 2/3 innings in SMU’s first four games, compiling a 2-0 record and a 1.02 ERA, and throwing a pair of complete games. … Naleya Bork (DePere, Wis.) put together a 1-0 record and 1.31 ERA in 5 1/3 innings, while Izzy Griffin (West St. Paul, Minn.) locked up SMU’s other win, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 3.0 IP. … As a staff, Saint Mary’s pitchers own a 1.17 ERA and opposing batters are hitting just .170.
• PITCHING FIRSTS: Steffes recorded her first collegiate pitching win with a six-inning, six-hitter against Northwestern last Saturday. … Griffin picked up her first collegiate win, and her first collegiate shutout — in her first collegiate start — in a 2-0 victory over Carleton last season, while Bork recorded her first pitching win as a Cardinal against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 18, 2023, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of a 5-1 Saint Mary’s win.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: Saint Mary’s pitchers struck out 18 batters in four games last weekend, led by Steffes with nine and Griffin with five. … Cardinal hurlers combined to strike out 133 batters in 2023. … Bork, who finished with 48 strikeouts a year ago, fanned a career-high 10 batters in the Cardinals’ 8-3 win over Houghton on Feb. 27, 2023. The 10 strikeouts were the most by a Cardinal pitcher since Amber Chow fanned 10 against Gustavus on April 17, 2021.
• IN THE POST-SEASON: The Cardinals made their sixth MIAC Tournament appearance in 2023 — and their first since 2013 — falling to St. Olaf 3-2. SMU, which previously appeared in the conference post-season tournament in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, and 2013, has gone 5-13 in its 18 conference tournament contests.
• COLLECTING NO. 20: Saint Mary’s 12-11, Game 2 win over Augsburg on May 4 was its 20th win of the season a year ago, giving the Cardinals their first 20-win season since going 22-16 during the 2016 campaign.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has outscored its first four opponents 42-7, and has allowed runs in just three of the seven innings. SMU holds a 6-0 scoring edge in the first inning and a 13-1 edge in the second. … SMU has scored five or more runs in an inning four times — including an 11-run fourth inning in the Cardinals’ 22-1, five-inning victory over North Central last Saturday. … Saint Mary’s has held three of its first four opponents to two runs or less. … The Cardinals have scored first in three of their first four games.
