DECORAH, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams were good in their first three meets of the season — very good.
Saturday afternoon at the Luther Invitational, the Cardinals were even better.
The SMU men's and women's teams combined for 26 Top 10 finishes — including a pair of event winners and 18 Top 5 showings.
Chris Bulwa and
Samantha Kubes led the way for the Cardinals, with Bulwa winning the men's 200, stopping the clock in 22.72, while Kubes won the women's weight throw with a mark of 15.94 meters.
Antonio Cisewski,
Casen Fritz, and
Cade Kloss all chipped in second-place efforts for the SMU men — Cisewski posting a second in the long jump (5.98m), Fritz recording a second-place mark of 14.23m in the weight throw, and Kloss stopping the clock in 1:29.95 to finish second in the 600.
Other Top 5 efforts for the SMU men included:
Oliver Adamson (third, 200, 23.66),
Eddie Paton (third, 400, 53.39),
Brady Johnson (fourth, 500, 53.73),
Dan Cooper (fourth, long jump, 5.76m),
Ben Kritsberg (fifth, 60, 7.30), and
Ron White (fifth, weight throw, 11.54m / fifth, shot put, 11.98m).
Along with Kubes' win in the weight throw,
Kaylen Pray posted a third-place time of 8.34 in the 60 and
Sydney Jackman was third in the shot put (11.51m). Other Top 5s for the SMU women were:
Morgan Wallendal (fourth, shot put, 11.51m),
Hanna Strom (fifth, high jump, 1.27m), and Kubes (fifth, shot put, 11.25m).
The Cardinals are right back in action next weekend, taking part in a pair of meets next Saturday, with part of the squad competing at the MSU-Mankato Maverick Premier Meet in Mankato, Minn., while the rest are headed to Platteville, Wis., to take part in the UW-Platteville Invitational.
