WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams have just one chance each season to showcase their talents in front of their home fans.
And the Cardinals put on quite a show Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals recorded 29 top five finishes — including six first-place efforts — at the Saint Mary's Invitational at the SMU Track and Field Complex.
Samantha Munson and
Morgan Wallendal each posted a first- and second-place effort to lead the way for the SMU women. Munson won the 200 with a time of 26.34 and placed second in the 100, stopping the clock in 12.80, while Wallendal won the shot put with a mark of 12.0 meters and added a second in the hammer with a throw of 40.86 meters.
SMU throwers went 1-2-3 in both the hammer and the shot put —
Sydney Jackman (second, 11.68m) and
Samantha Kubes (third, 11.63m) followed Jackman in the shot put, while Kubes won the hammer (50.51m) and
Anna Becker added a third (40.06m) — and
Isabella Schei uncorked a throw of 30.47 meters to record the SMU women's other first in the javelin.
On the men's side,
Chris Bulwa had a hand in both first-place finishes, breezing to a first in the 200 (21.51) and teaming with
Ben Kritsberg,
Brady Johnson, and
Oliver Adamson to break the tape in 42.02 to win the 4x100 relay.
Hanna Strom chipped in a second in the high jump (1.45m) for the SMU women, while
Kaylen Pray (third, 400, 1:03.56),
Caeli McMahon (third, 800, 2:31.44),
Erica Wright (fourth, discus, 29.96m; fifth, javelin, 24.38m), and
Brooklyn Gutierrez (fourth, high jump, 1.35m) also collected top-five performances.
On the men's side,
Cannon Manley (110 hurdles, 16.02),
Ron White (shot put, 11.30m), and
Gabe Schonknecht (steeplechase, 10:40.71) all recorded second-place efforts, with White (third, discus, 35.91m), Johnson (third, triple jump, 12.47m), Adamson (third, 200, 22.26),
Casen Fritz (third, hammer, 42.01m),
Isaiah Fitzgerald (third, 5,000, 17:07.49),
Dan Cooper (fourth, triple jump, 12.07m),
Evan Finney (fifth, 1,500, 4:37.47),
Henry Gathje (fifth, javelin, 41.13m) chipping in top-five efforts.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, when they travel to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge.
