MANKATO, Minn. — Several members of the Saint Mary's University track and field teams took time out from their finals schedule to get in a little work at the Minnesota State-Mankato Maverick Open Wednesday evening.
And keeping with the spirit of semester-ending finals, the Cardinals graded out with a resounding A+.
The small Cardinal contingent picked up 10 Top 15 performances at the mid-week event — including a fourth by
Henry Gathje in the javelin and a sixth by
Samantha Kubes in the hammer throw.
Gathje delivered a mark of 42.65 meters en route to his fourth-place effort, while Kubes — coming off a school-record showing at last weekend's Macalester Rider/Bolstorff Invitational — uncorked a throw of 49.85 meters to place sixth in the hammer.
Isabella Schei chipped in an eighth in the javelin (31.28m) for the SMU women, while
Samantha Munson (13th, 100, 13.01),
Morgan Wallendal (14thk hammer, 44.78m), and
Sydney Jackman (15th, shot put, 11.26m) also collected Top 15 performances. On the men's side,
Dan Cooper (10th, long jump, 6.08m),
Oliver Adamson (10th, 200, 22.50; 15th, 100, 11.16), and
Cannon Manley (13th, 400H, 1:02.72) joined Gathje with Top 15 efforts.
Saint Mary's will have one more tune-up before the outdoor season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, as they head to St. Paul, Minn., on Friday to take part in the Meet of the unSaintly, hosted by Hamline.
