MENOMONIE, Wis. — The last time the Saint Mary's University and UW-Stout women's soccer teams squared off, the Blue Devils put an end to the Cardinals' 23-game nonocnference winning streak with a 2-1 victory a year ago.

This time around, the Blue Devils were their streak-snapping selves — again — as UW-Stout put an end. to SMU's six-game nonconference winless streak (5-0-1), beating the Cardinals 5-1 Thursday evening.

"UW-Stout's a good team, but I don't think they were really four goals better than we are," said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman. "The difference was really pretty simple — they finished their scoring opportunities, and we didn't."

The Blue Devils put the game out of reach early, scoring three goals in a nine-minute span midway through the opening half. Jessica Price sandwiched her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season around a Katie Ness tally to give UW-Stout a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.

Holly Swisher pushed UW-Stout's lead to 4-0 in the game's 60th minute, before Marie Allen (Wausau, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board with her second of the season in the 74th minute. Cassie Palokangas rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Lauren Mess (Lake Geneva, Wis.) had a busy night in goal for SMU, finishing with eight saves, while UW-Stout goalkeeper Taylor Randle had three saves.

The Cardinals, who fall to 5-11-1 overall, close out their season on Saturday, Nov. 1, traveling to Bethel for a 3 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
