MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — In each of their last three games, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team has eclipsed the 30-point barrier in the game's opening 20 minutes.

The Cardinals scored 32 first-half points in back-to-back wins over Hamline (80-72) and Concordia (77-58), then netted 33 first-half points in a heartbreaking, four-point 71-67 loss to St. Olaf on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, there was no quick start in Monday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg.

In fact, the Cardinals had their foot on the gas, but were left spinning their wheels, managing just 26 points in the opening 20 minutes — and they never recovered in falling to the Auggies 84-64.

Augsburg raced out to a 44-26 halftime advantage, and the Cardinals never recovered, falling behind by as many as 29 points on two separate occasions and never getting closer than the final 20-point deficit.

The Cardinals did knock down a season-high 11 3-pointers against the Auggies, but made just 10 of 35 attempts from inside the arc. Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) scored a team-best 13 points, while Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) coming off a week in which he averaged 27 points and six rebounds per game — and earned MIAC Co-Player of the Week honors in the process — was held to 11 points, six of which came from the free throw line.

Nate Alm and David Olson each scored 14 points to lead five Augsburg players in double figures. Andy Grzesiak-Grimm added 11 points, while Jon Cassens and Cory Polta each chipped in 10 points.

The Cardinals, who fall to 3-7 in the MIAC and 4-11 overall, are back in action — and back on the road — on Wednesday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Macalester.
