NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team was nothing if they weren't consistent Monday evening against Carleton.
The Cardinals shot 37 percent from the field in the first half and 37 percent from the field in the second half — including a pair of 3-pointers in the first half, and drained two more in the second half.
The problem was, the consistent Cardinals couldn't keep up with the equally consistent Knights.
Carleton outscored SMU by four points in the first half, taking a 30-26 halftime lead, then padded their first-half point production by 10 points to outscore the Cardinals by more four points in the second half in handing Saint Mary's a 70-62 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) put together his second straight 20-plus point performance, draining a game-high 25 points, while
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) and
Bradley Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cardinals.
Bryan Rosett and Zach Johnson combined to score more than half of the Knights' 70 points, as Rosett tossed in 24 points, which Johnson added a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Blaise Davis also reached double figures for Carleton, finishing with 11 points.
Carleton dropped in the game's opening basket — a 3-pointer by Davis — and would never relinquish the lead, building leads as big as nine in the first half, before, settling fo r a30-26 halftime edge. In the second half, Carleton pushed its lead to as many as 17 points, 57-40, with 9:14 remaining, only to have SMU cut the gap to five on two separate occasions, the last on a pair of free throws by Holland with 2:06 left on the clock to make it 63-58.
That, however, would be as close as SMU would get in falling to 1-5 in the MIAC and 2-9 overall. The Cardinals are back in action Wednesday, returning home for a 7:30 p.m. conference contest against Hamline.
